I'm a huge fan of Tu Madre, and love the WeHo and Los Feliz locations. The food is always great across the board at different locations, but unfortunately that was not the case at this location.
They only opened a few weeks ago, so there definitely will be some kinks while they adjust to everything and fall into a rhythm and I'm hoping it will improve. When we arrived (myself and 2 others), there wasn't a host, so we stood there for 5 minutes trying to get their attention until someone finally acknowledged us and seated us. Once seated by a server, she left and disappeared for awhile. Typically upon sitting down (at all other locations), water and chips are dropped off at the table. After about 10 minutes a different server came up to our table asking if we wanted anything to drink, and we requested water, and also inquired about chips and salsa. We ordered 2 drinks. The server stood there for way too long as he scrolled through the toast menu trying to find each of our drinks. It took him a few minutes to add in each of our drinks, while he stood there awkwardly. We only ordered a margarita and a martini and assumed at the very least he could walk away and remember those if he was having a hard time finding them on toast rather than standing there.
He eventually left. A few minutes later, we got water. Then the original server who seated us walked up, introduced herself, and asked if we wanted anything to drink. We mentioned we already ordered with a different server. She looked perplexed and said that was weird, and that she was covering our section. She again asked if we really did order. Eventually she walked away still looking quizzical. The margarita was delivered, and we inquired about the chips again from this other guy. He said he'd go grab them for us (sorry, we were just really hungry). A little while later, and before the martini came, our server returned to take our order. Again, the ordering process was a bit painful, taking forever for him to log each of our orders, which had barely any modifications if any. The martini finally arrived, after he left. When ordering we also reminded him of the chips, as we had now been there about 30 minutes. We then received the chips a fair while after the server left. My friends food came almost immediately after the chips, but then we didn't receive the rest of our meals for about 10 more minutes. My friend wanted to wait to eat until we all had our food. When his food came the delivering server told us it was a vegan Bahn Mi bowl, which he didn't order. We asked if it was the regular Bahn Mi, and he insisted it was the vegan one. After our request, he asked the kitchen and came back saying it was actually the regular Bahn Mi bowl that he ordered. I have a few allergies, and this made me a bit worried that there might be a mess up on my order. Luckily there wasn't.
The portions we received were surprisingly small and less than we usually receive at other locations: they also did not taste up to par. The bowls were a bit dry. I'm sure this will work itself out eventually, but we were left fairly unsatisfied. We had a different server come and ask if we needed anything else, and we asked for more chips and water (sorry, we were still left hungry after the smaller portions). He enthusiastically said he'd go grab some.... he never returned and we never got our chips or water. At one point a different server or maybe busser(?) tried to clear our plates, even though we were still eating and had food left on our plates (we did appreciate him being proactive though). Later, after our plates were actually cleared and we asked our server if we could pay after waiting (still never getting the chips or water refill).
Overall, I think they could improve on their customer service, timeliness, and food/drinks. I really hope they are able to grow with these suggestions, because I am very excited to have another Tu Madre location closer to my home. We are very appreciative of their time, and understand things can be bumpy at the start until they get into the...
Read moreI am writing to express my profound dissatisfaction with my first visit to this location, which I can confidently say will be my last. Initially, everything seemed promising; the atmosphere was pleasant, and the staff appeared welcoming. However, the experience quickly took a turn for the worse due to an incident that left a bitter taste in my mouth.
During our meal, the assistant manager, Hernan, took it upon himself to send a host to inform us that we were not allowed to hold our dog in our arms. This was delivered to us under the pretext of a "health department restriction." I was taken aback by this declaration, as I have dined at numerous restaurants with my dog by my side, and never once have I encountered such an absurd rule. The connection I share with my dog is not just a triviality; it’s a part of my dining experience, and being told that I couldn’t even hold my pet was not only baffling but also incredibly disheartening.
What truly upset me about this situation was the manner in which it was handled. Instead of approaching us directly and explaining the policy in a respectful manner, Hernan chose to send someone else to relay this information. This felt impersonal and made me feel like an inconvenience rather than a valued customer. The way this policy was enforced not only disrupted our meal but also completely soured the experience for me and my companions.
If there are indeed strict restrictions regarding animals, it would be prudent for your establishment to prominently display clear signage at the entrance. This would allow customers to make informed decisions about whether or not to dine there with their pets, rather than being blindsided while trying to enjoy their meal. It is incredibly frustrating to have a dining experience marred by unexpected rules, especially when those rules are not communicated upfront.
I left the restaurant feeling disheartened and unwelcome, with an overwhelming sense of frustration. What should have been an enjoyable meal turned into an uncomfortable and awkward situation, and for that reason, I cannot see myself returning to this location in the future. I hope you take this feedback seriously and consider revising your policies and how they are communicated to customers. No one should have their dining experience ruined over a simple act of affection...
Read moreI came to this establishment for cinco de mayo since the West Hollywood location was packed. We were told it would be 15 mins for a table. We waited outside for 48 mins for a party of 3 in the cold. We were the last people waiting so much that multiple staff asked if we had been helped. Finally seated, when there were no other patrons waiting and a table freed up. It took 9 minutes for us to get a server to take our order who happened to be the hostess. We ordered everything with her because we didn't know if they would come back soon enough. Appetizer specials came out but we had no plates, silverware or napkins to even eat it as it got cold. Drinks had still not been delivered which were the easiest. Another server brings up our silverware and has no roll ups so he just sits loose forks on the table as he strokes unfolded napkins to sit in front of us and apologizes. Then they tell us that they ran out of tortilla chips and need to make more so our chips and guacamole will take a while. It's an appetizer. But to my surprise they came out in about 3 minutes however the large nacho I ordered never came out. I told them to cancel it because they were bringing our entrees out already. The tacos were tasty but everything else was mid. We ordered the margarita flights and it was straight juice, I'm fully sober. While the servers were trying their hardest to be attentive I can tell they saw how they messed up as well as my straight face annoyed attitude and they kept saying how overwhelming the day was. That's not a problem a patron should have to stomach or deal with. I've worked in food service for 15 years and my father is an executive chef, just do your job. The restaurant was clearing out when we were seated and there were no new people coming in so our service should have been up to par. This was my first time to any Tu Madré establishments and it will certainly be my last. Lackluster service, overpriced single tacos, pretty but weak terrible drinks and an outlandish wait time. Yea...I just wanted the check. Never again. That's what I get for going to a chain on...
