Revised 11/5/21: I have returned to Cheba Hut and find it to have improved quite a bit, even as they were planning an official grand opening party. I am cautiously optimistic that they have and will continue to show better service and quality, and I look forward to hopefully seeing them prosper in the months and years to come. I will say that it is better to go when you have time to sit and enjoy your meal, as this is not a place for a super quick bite (but it still beats some sandwich places, like Subway, by a marathon), and I look forward to returning on a recurring basis. Thank you.
Original review: 1 out of 5 stars (9/28/21) Unfortunately, although my first experience to Cheba Hut was pretty good, my second one left a lot to be desired. I ordered my food for pickup on the Waitr app, and it told me it would be ready between 12:50 and 1 PM. It notified me around 12:55 my order was ready, and by the time I got there around 1:05 PM, not only was my order NOT ready but it was also not even being made yet. Their excuses were the Waitr app was automated with pickup times that they didn't control, which I find questionable given I have ordered food for pickup many a time from other restaurants and, unless I got there before I got the "your order is ready for pickup" notification, it was always ready, and the second excuse was that they had a lot of orders (which seemed a bit questionable given the lunch crowd was normal and there were MANY people working behind the counter, easily 3-4 times as many compared to similar sandwich shops). They also did not make my sandwich correctly, did not have another item I ordered, and the order was finally finished around 1:20.
I will cut them some slack because they are new, but unless things change very quickly, the marijuana novelty may hold on for LSU students and South Baton Rouge residents given Mellow Mushroom's demise, but not much else. I may give them another chance, but I do not intend to return until I get word they improve either with communication of order and supplies or I have a lot of...
Read moreTonight was my first time here after hearing so many good things. The food here is genuinely good and clearly made with care. All of the sandwiches were phenomenal. Iâd absolutely come back for the sandwiches alone. But the service experience really took away from the overall enjoyment.
We sat at the bar, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like we were an afterthought. The bartender did not greet us, offer drinks when we sat down, or even said hello. We had to flag down the bartender for everything; ordering, drink refills, even paying the check. He wouldn't even walk over to take our orders, we had to yell to him where he was standing at the computer. He also completely ignored anyone in the group who said hi or asked how he was doing, just wordlessly handed us the menus and walked away, and never checked in on us after we had gotten our food. He was very preoccupied with his phone. It wasn't especially busy, so it was frustrating to feel like we were interrupting rather than being served.
Itâs a shame, because the kitchen is doing great work, and the guys who brought our food out provided a better customer experience in the five seconds it took to hand off our food than the bartender did in an hour. A little more attention from the front of house, especially at the bar, would go a long way in making the experience match the quality of the food. I probably won't be back for a...
Read moreA long time ago, I used to go to the original Cheba Hut in Tempe, AZ. I loved it, but after moving away, I hadnât been to one in ages. A random Tuesday pickup in Baton Rouge finally gave me the chance to revisit an old favorite.
Some things have changedâyou used to be able to watch them make your sandwiches, adding something on a whim or getting an idea from the sandwich maker. Now thereâs a glass partition, and youâre not really sure if that sandwich being made is yours. But the menu? Almost untouched. Every favorite of mine is still there, with the same playfully weed-strain-named sammies and sizes. And the goo ballsâalways my absolute favorite.
I ordered my all-time go-to, the tuna melt (Pacific Blue). Somewhere along the way, they switched the cheese to cheddar? I always remembered it with Swiss. I wish I had noticed that on the menu, but honestly, I loved my sandwich anyway.
And this location has a bar! Back in the day, we used to sneak in beersâno one ever said anythingâbut that was probably around 2003, practically on ASUâs campus. The bar here had a fabulous bartender. I wish I had gotten her name because she truly made my day and is a fantastic face for Cheba Hut. Super friendly, and when I told her I hadnât been to a Cheba Hut in 17 years, she was full of important information. A real gem.
So, if youâre on the fence about trying this...
