The meal: Smothered pork chops with gravy and rice; smothered green beans; candied sweet potatoes; cornbread; sweet tea.
This is one of those restaurants where the food is indistinguishable from that of your favorite auntie or your grandmother when you were growing up. The pork chop was well-seasoned and completely covered in really tasty gravy which went well with the rice (not too sticky, not too separate). Served with smothered green beans just like they came out of my mom's cast iron pot. Candied sweet potatoes are always hard to screw up but these were truly delicious.
And to me the mark of weather a restaurant really knows what's up: the cornbread. The cornbread was browned and just slightly crispy for a couple of millimeters on the outside edges where it was touching the pan (if you don't know cornbread, that's a good thing); lighter and just a bit more crumbly than most, the taste was perfect: halfway between sweet and salty and it perfectly complemented The meal it was served with.
As if you were the reviews here have stated, the sweet tea is⦠The reason why sweet tea is an institution in the south. Strong, long-brewed tea taste and a lot of sugar. Too many places screwup that "long-brewed" part; this was PERFECT.
The environment is homey and clean and comfortable. This is not the kind of place to go if you're looking for lack of ambient noise. But if you're looking for lack of ambient noise, you're not looking for soul food anyway.
And the portions: Large ā ā the size you will want after you taste the food.
Bottom line: Dorothy's serves truly delicious home-cooked soul food. Honestly, it's easily among the best I've ever had at...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreiāve eaten here 15 years but probably wonāt again. i pulled up ordered my food they asked cash or card(5:35p). Lady comes out with food at 5:54 ask me do i have cash, i stated no and that i answered all that on the phone. she says she will try to swipe card. it goes through. i then go to tell her that iāve eaten there for about 15 years and i proceed to tell about things they can do better, like the long waits in the hot sun, the fact that they donāt answer the phone⦠etc. she got defensive and told me she had been the manager there for the last two years and she does what the owner tells her, and that she had NEVER had a customer make complaints about what i was complaining about. after going back and forth with her for about 7 minutes, i tell her to have a nice day. i come home to write a review and then i read all the other reviews which she probably doesnāt. This place good food, i donāt agree with the sugary yams and collards. it can be such a great successful place, but they refuse to get professional. The inside is not closed because of Covid, i do not believe that all. The inside is closed because they are not investing the money into the business, two years ago this place still had carpet in the floor. The two year manager was not dressed like she handled food, and had a large rash from her elbow to her wrist and covered some of her fingers on her left arm. Maybe this altercation was a sign to eat healthier. Good...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreFirst time visiting so I ordered a few things to try. The environment was welcoming and very comfortable, almost like it was already familiar and the staff was sweet and delightful. The meatloaf sandwich was simplistic yet just right. It was very delicious and well made. My first time having pig tail and I must say it reminded me of ham hock but different. Very tender and flavorful. It was a perfect match with the red beans and rice. It seemed slightly sweet but it had an amazing texture and overall flavor. The cornbread was just right with the meal as well. The fried fish was seasoned and fried to perfection, I love me some fried catfish. The spaghetti and cheese was amazing, a nice take on Mac and cheese. I loved the cabbage and would have like a little more of it. The pork chop was perfectly tender and delicious and matched well with the rice and gravy. I loved every drop of this meal and plan to try other menu items. I did have a sweet potato pie and loved every bit...
