Busy place…. Hostess was amazing. Manager was good. Waitress was not. I have been in the restaurant industry working every position since 2003. The first problem that was wrong was the soup. Second problem no check back or table check up. The soup was then brought out and slammed on table( she brought wrong soup) OK so a little Philly flair. After waiting 25 minutes for appetizer we decided to leave. The table greet took over 8 minutes.
If someone can’t handle a party table and a 3 top someone else might need to handle those ‘big’ sections. Working as a fine dining server under celebrity chefs a 15 top and 3 other tables should be navigable.
After deciding to leave the hostess who was absolutely amazing tried talking us into staying. The waitress then came to the door and asked if we were gonna pay. We said we were already paying for the Matzo ball soup. She then came back out and said the food was ready, and continued to say that they weren’t a McDonalds. I love the fact that servers can talk back to guest. Gawd knows I have wanted to do that on several occasions so kudos for managers allowing people to be feisty. Yes the server is right they are not McDonald’s. However you guys are not a Dennys/ Cracker Barrel or Friendly's either. The problem was everyone who was after us were all halfway through their meals and we hadn’t even got the app yet and it was just three of us. This can be either “I was slammed” situation in which she could ask someone to help her out of the weeds or it was a “food” in window situation or “I forgot to ring in the food because I don’t want to lose the tip on the bigger ‘party’ situation.
The bakery amazing. The water was good in the kid cups. The Matzo that was given was good too. The waitress just didn’t know what she was doing. All of us have ‘days’ and I was humored by the talking back but if you talk back make sure you’re not the clown in the situation.
We also kept seeing people with pickles but didn’t know anything about them!
Desperate times call for desperate hiring. I get it! But maybe have the serving staff wait on a table of managers it might help the situation just a tad.
My buddy and I who were at the table have been asked to open up other restaurants for one of the top steakhouses in the US.
I’m doing a 4 out of 5 stars because I don’t believe a bad worker should sink the reviews on a rather popular restaurant destination.
This review does not reflect all the service staff at this restaurant. It does not reflect the food either. Just one person who couldn’t handle...
Read moreHymie’s played a special role in my life and this is where I met my best friend for life Paul, This was one of my first jobs in the early 80s and I would switch back back-and-forth to their other store city line deli, for the first couple of years as a teenager. And from time to time, I would come back to pick up work to earn extra money to fill gaps , and they were always welcoming. Sam Barson was the owner at the time, I learned many great work ethic skills from him along with the deli manager at that time Ivan, Sam’s son Louis took over the operation years later and has done an incredible job taking this establishment to a different level with the same great style deli food and with a lot of new added menu items. I came here looking to revisit where my cooking career started and also some vegan options while they don’t have a vegan section they have an açai bowl, salad section , an impossible burger, and many items can be made vegan. When I entered the store I was immediately greeted and immediately seated. One of the many things that are special about a place like Hymies is the service is second to none and the servers are always accommodating and present. I ordered a everything bagel with a side of lettuce, tomato, green pepper and onion and black olives kind of a build your own sandwich with a side of olive oil it’s made for the perfect vegan treat. The bagel huge fresh and scooped and grilled like I asked and was done perfectly. Served with the freshest of tomatoes, lettuce, and onion you can ask for you’ll see in the pictures. It was kind of fun to build and this was so delicious. It’d be nice to see a small vegan section or maybe a menu insert, it’s very simple to do with the ingredients they already have on the menu , Just add a little bit of tofu, tempeh, edamame and seitan, with a few tweaks, you have a vegan menu, it’s that simple. If that ever happens, I’ll be the first one there . I find that a lot of the vegan products have a nice shelf life that being said most vegans know when you go to a place we look at the menu ahead of time and if it’s not vegan, We are able to break the menu down and make our own dishes as long as the restaurant is willing to and I find that most are. Great memories here I highly recommend this if you’re looking for old school delicious giant sandwiches done perfectly and of course their deli is at the top of their game. Thank you too Louis for doing such a fantastic job. Keeping this suburban...
Read moreMy first and very last time: I drove over an hour and a half, paid for parking and waited about 15 minutes or more to be served. I stood patiently in front of the counter and nobody even observed my presence. I had to excerpt attention by asking questions, otherwise I was being completely ignored by several gentlemen behind the fish and deli counters. The bakery counter associate was friendlier, but nobody was going out of their way to make my experience a most memorable one. Maybe this is just how they conduct business, but i expect much more when I'm spending my hard earned money at a place business. I'm giving Two- Stars today rather than just one at the moment, because I haven't had the opportunity to taste anything I purchased as of yet. Lesson learned, don't take your customers for granted. We demand exceptional service and quality products and services and refuse to settle for anything less. I am appalled at how my family and I were treated today at your place of business. Happy Mothers Day to all of the amazing moms. Please take care and God Bless...
Update following day: First and formost, i would like to state their prices for all of their deli, fish and salad type items located in the deli cases have zero prices on anything. I have no idea what the cost per pound for anything I purchased. Obviously this is done purposely, so nobody knows what they are being charged. Borderline thievery, at its very best. Why would a restaurant not advertise their price for items they sell to the public? I could go on and on, but I think I've said enough already. The white fish taste like it was store bought, not made fresh in the kitchen. The nova was already pre-sliced and very slimy and of subpar flavor. The pastries obviously are not made fresh in their kitchen, as they was very dry in flavor and not very fresh. I believe they get many of their food items from other companies premaid, and then resell them as fresh to their customers. I'm a borderline foodie, so I know fresh great quality foods when I taste them. Based on my 3 hour drive back and forth, I would say this was a total fail, and i will be adjusting my review accordingly down to a One-Star review. This was definitely not a memorable dining experience to remember. It's very sad that quality, fresh food in restaurants is almost practically a thing of the past. I hope everyone continues to stay healthy and well during this difficult time. Have a...
