Chen's Garden — Restaurant in Lower Township

I don’t normally leave negative reviews, but my experience at this restaurant was beyond unacceptable. My order was spoiled — the food was clearly bad and inedible. I called to let them know, and they told me to come in for a refund.

However, when we arrived, the staff was not only unhelpful but extremely rude. One employee even made an inappropriate and offensive comment, saying, “I don’t know what you people are smoking.” That statement was not only unprofessional but also felt racially charged and deeply disrespectful.

We were treated with suspicion and disrespect from the moment we walked in — as if we were trying to scam them, rather than resolve a valid complaint. It was clear we were being profiled, and the level of hostility we experienced was unacceptable.

No one should be treated this way — especially after receiving spoiled food. A simple refund turned into a humiliating and upsetting experience.

I ordered 2 spring rolls and 1 egg told, asking specifically if the spring rolls were vegetarian since I have a shellfish allergy and my daughter and I are vegetarian. They assured me that they were. When my daughter and I took a bite of one of the spring rolls it had a funny taste like fish. I called immediately and they assured me they were vegetables only and had no shellfish.

We just figured the first one tasted different than what we are used to, thinking it was just the sauce. A few minutes later I began to feel tingling in my mouth. I cut open the 2nd one to not only find large slivers of pork but also 2 shrimp. I called them immediately and they again assured me they had no shrimp. Their response was not a full refund but we will put a note on your account that you are allergic. That’s it. I am sorry for that does not cover this. This used to be my favorite place * PLEASE READ ALL THE WAY THROUGH* This is a Family based restaurant and the children used to work here answering the phones and taking orders as well as dealing with customers since the parents speak little English. The past year the children are away at school and they hired a answering service for orders. The answering service is RUDE and LIES. I tried to tell the owners about it but they had no answer or apology. I was told my order was ^in the area^ for an hour. I went to the restaurant and called in front of them and let them hear that my order was in my area but wasn't even started yet.
