Silk Road Restaurant — Restaurant in Madison

Our group of six tried Silk Road for dinner last Tuesday evening. I made reservations online. It was easy to make reservations, and they confirmed both via email and text. When we arrived, our table was waiting front and center.

The restaurant was clean, open, and the seats were comfortable. There were a few other tables populated, and I saw a couple of people come in and pick up their orders. One of my dining companions mentioned that he thought the building used to be a Taco Johns. Not sure if that is true, but it was easy to get to and park.

Our server was friendly and prompt. He made recommendations when asked and did check in to see how we were doing.

We started with the hummus which was served with warmed sliced pita. It was delicious and I definitely would recommend it. One of our friends claimed he didn't like chickpeas, but he enjoyed the hummus. When we ran out of pita, our server brought more. Another friend tried the lentil soup (Mercimek Corbasi) and said it was very tasty. For entrees our group ordered the Grilled Salmon, Beef kebab, Lamb Kebab, and Kabuli Palov. The lamb was amazing. Our server brought a steak knife, but I was able to cut it with my fork, it was so tender, juicy, and flavorful. On the other hand, our friends were not fans of the beef kebab and indicated it was too chewy. The rice was light and fluffy. I really liked the rice in the Kabuli Palov. It was seasoned and delicious. The kebabs were served with grilled peppers and tomatoes as well as a seasoned (tomato?) sauce I really enjoyed. The friend who ordered the salmon thought it was perfectly cooked. I did try the Ayran which was a salty yogurt beverage. However, I think that must be an acquired taste and would not get that again.

My wife and I went to Silk Road for our anniversary the other night and unfortunately left a bit disappointed. The main reason being the service. Silk Road seats around 10 to 15 tables and by the looks of it, only 1 server was handling all of these tables, and it was evident. We ordered 1 app to share and an entree for each of us. After 10 minutes or so, only 1 item came out and that was my wife's entree. I gave them the benefit of the doubt because it was busy, and I waited another 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, after my wife ate most of her meal, the serve finally checked in on us. He asked how things were, and I said, "I was just wondering when the rest would come out". He gave me a very confused look, and I explained we ordered the Mantu and Adana Kebab. He apologized and told me it would be another 15 minutes because the only item he put on our order was the 1 entree and not the other two items. Normally, I do not get irritated with low-staffing issues, but this just seemed to be a giant error all around. After we waited another 15 minutes and my wife's meal was already finished, we received the rest of our food. Overall, the food was tasty but due to the server never really acknowledging the mistake and having me sit and watch my wife eat, I will have to stick with 2 stars. Had wanted to try this restaurant for a while and found an opportunity this weekend to visit . The atmosphere is welcoming and immediately felt welcome and relaxed . It is a smaller restaurant with a warm vibe .

Staff and our server explained the menu and answered our questions . Unfortunately one of the dishes we wanted to try Tajik Pilaf with raisins was sold out , but we will be back to try it next time .

We got two fruit drinks that are very refreshing and perfect for a hot summer day . We started with a grilled peach salad which a good balance of sweet savory and crunch from salted nuts . Definitely a good start and combination of ingredients.

As they were just out of their special which we wanted to try , we went for the kebab platter mix for two people . This is served with a pilaf & chickpea side dish and well grilled veggies on the side. Three different kebabs all perfectly grilled and prepared. Chicken was juicy and flavorful , lamb was well seasoned and beef was okay . The beef was our least favorite due to having too much fat in certain pieces .
