Finding a fully vegan menu at a BBQ place in the Midwest is unhear of unless you go here! I was amazed to see this online, so I went in hopeful. Vegans have their own cashier, and all vegan items are cooked on separate grills and in separate fryers than the non-vegan items... so there's no cross-contamination. (The fries on the non-vegan line are fried in the same grease they fry their bacon.)
I ordered the vegan ribz was pretty disappointed at the small portion. You get four "ribs", but they're very small and flat. The flavor and texture was decent but enhanced by adding the extra sauces they provide at the self-serve station near the register. I didn't really feel I got my money's worth, but at least it comes with two sides. The trick is knowing which sides to get (you get two with the ribz). The Spicy Sweet Corn is way too spicy and not very sweet. I'd rather just have regular corn. The cashew mac'n'cheese was pretty bland, so I wouldn't recommend that, either. (My daughter was excited to order it as her main choice but was quickly disappointed. It was basically cold by the time we got it, too.) I ordered the Spinach Salad w/vegan bacon, mushrooms, and Basil Vinaigrette, and that was probably my favorite. You get a free piece of cheezy garlic bread with the ribz, but it was mostly crusty/crisp and the cheese wasn't melty at all. So... if you get the ribz, get a side salad and an order of the vegan fries.
My son ordered the Notaburger w/vegan cheese and bacon and thought it was delicious! He could only eat half of it, so I got the rest of it for leftovers the next night. Wonderful! And our bacon wasn't tough as another reviewer experienced. Again, he ordered the mac'n'(cashew)cheese as his side and was sadly disappointed. If you get the burger, order the fries!
The cashier told me that they used to offer a vegan potato salad that was "reeeeally good", so if that's on the menu when you go, give it a shot.
Another sad point is that there were absolutely no vegan desserts to complete the meal. Desserts are what "seal the deal" on a good restaurant, and Smokee Mo's is lacking there for the vegans. We like sweets, too!
Overall, I'd definitely recommend Smokee Mo's to any vegan forced to eat BBQ with relatives or co-workers. It's very hard to find any BBQ restaurant that offers more than just a salad or baked potato/fries for a...
Read moreI just want too let everyone know there is NO labor dispute at Smokee Mo's St. Louis BBQ. All construction of the building by an out-of state company that provided the structure and THEIR OWN WORKERS, over which Smokee Mos had NO hiring control, and was the reason for the pickets, ended more than 6 months ago. There is nothing for Smokee Mo's to do to resolve a non existent situation. There is no work going on that Smokee Mo's can hire union workers for. For a union to keep a picket line up a half year after the disputed work was finished is just plain harassment. I'm former IBEW Local 1 myself and I eat at Smokee Mo's every week. I've spoken to the owners about the situation and am more than satisfied that this is a bogus picket line for personal, not business reasons. I saw union electricians (and other crafts too) working there every day when it was being built. I'm totally satisfied that I can cross this bogus picket line in good conscience after hearing the actual facts. I do so because this is the best BBQ I've had anywhere in St. Louis and no fraudulent picket line is going to stop me and my family from going there. The vegan BBQ is unmatched anywhere in St. Louis. Their vegan Notaburger tastes like real meat. The vegan BLT would fool any meat eater. Their pork steaks are big enough to choke a horse and tender as can be. The Mangia Bene sandwich has no equal at any BBQ shack anywhere. It just isn't worth missing all of this over a lie. Get the facts and find out the truth for yourself rather than be a "sheep" going along with unethical union leaders in what looks to me like a personal vendetta and not a union...
