SLAY Steak + Fish House — Restaurant in Manhattan Beach

Came here for a belated Valentine's dinner and was pretty disappointed. It has the price point of a much better and dedicated steakhouse but without the quality to back it up. I'm thinking maybe because it doesn't seem like they age their meat? The seasoning was pretty good but the meat quality tasted underwhelming and it was cooked unevenly. Normally it's expect the outside to be a little more done than the center or thickest part of the steak, but instead what both I and my SO got was more of a gradient effect. Like my left side was just below well done and then I had medium on the right as I got towards the end of my steak (I ordered a medium). Honestly I have cooked better quality steaks at home which was saddening to think about since the point was to have a nice evening out. The vegetables they chose to complement as a side were good, but I think I mismatch in flavor and lacking in quantity (looked like snap peas, bok choy and some sort of cauliflower-family type vegetable). They do give you different types of potato, but that was a bit underwhelming as well and VERY crispy on the outside (had to use the steak knife to cut it). Wine selection is small but the ones we had were good at least. Dessert was a slight miss also. Banana cream pie has too thick of a layer of chocolate lining the crust (this is done so crust doesn't get soggy, but they put too much so it was difficult to cut and eat), and the creme brulee was a little grainy in that shirt of way where I'm pretty sure the eggs were starting to split. They do get points for service though because the staff was nice and mostly attentive. Overall I'm sorry to say we won't be back. For what it cost, I just...

I rarely leave reviews unless I really love something or really hate it. Unfortunately this is the later.

We were so disappointed. 😕 The food here was extremely underwhelming, honestly just bad, especially for the price... The only redeeming quality was the staff. Our server was extremely understanding and kind. The hostess gave us a better seat (another reservation cancelled) after being unfortunately stuck in a tiny bistro table by the bar because it was too cold to sit outside without a heater. Apparently MB doesn't allow outside heaters anymore??? PS The outside seating in these pictures is completely inaccurate, they only have a few tables by the outside wall now.

The food....Ooof. The squash blossoms were over powered with lemon. And that was the best thing I ate all night. My husband had the rack of lamb, which was just a few extremely under seasoned chops. He mentioned to staff that his rice was undercooked. When the manager came to talk, he let it go. We won't be doing that again. I ordered the salmon and it was... fishy. Not good fishy. I couldn't eat it.

The waiter brought a free dessert (chocolate pudding) which was also.... Not good. The manager did not return after we explained everything to the server. I'm assuming she wasn't happy or didn't believe us.

Regardless, I got home and had to go immediately to bed...

Dear Slay Restaurant, I wanted to take a moment to share my incredible dining experience at your establishment in Manhattan Beach, California. My wife, son, daughter-in-law, and I visited your restaurant during our vacation from Florida, and we were absolutely impressed.

First and foremost, the food was exceptional. We ordered the ribeye, risotto, fettuccini, and lasagna, and every dish had a spectacular flavor. The quality of ingredients and the culinary expertise were evident in every bite. We truly savored the meal and couldn't have asked for better options.

Additionally, I would like to highlight the outstanding service we received from Sue (the best) and Freddy (the other best) they really care about us. Their attentiveness and hospitality made us feel welcome and ensured a delightful dining experience. We greatly appreciate their efforts.

Overall, our visit to Slay Restaurant was a memorable one. The combination of remarkable food and excellent service made it an outstanding culinary experience for our family. We will definitely recommend your restaurant to our friends and family, and we look forward to returning whenever we're in the area.
