I went to the grand opening, a homecoming for chef and pizzaiolo Mike Bergemann, who relocated his acclaimed NYC slice shop to his native New Jersey. The space exudes nostalgic charm, featuring neon signage and red-and-black tile floors, creating a warm, retro ambiance. Corner Slice specializes exclusively in square pies, offering a unique "New York Square Pie" that bridges the gap between Sicilian and Grandma styles. The dough undergoes a meticulous three-day fermentation process, resulting in a crust that's light, airy, and crisp, with a distinctive crackly bottom from baking in olive oil-coated pans. I sampled the Upside Down, Vodka, and Pepperoni slices. The Upside Down featured mozzarella beneath a layer of vibrant tomato sauce, delivering a bright and nostalgic flavor. The Vodka slice offered a creamy, slightly spicy sauce complemented by thin shavings of mozzarella. The Pepperoni slice was topped with crispy, cupped pepperoni, adding a satistying savory note. While the craftsmanship and quality of ingredients are evident, personal taste preferences vary. For those who appreciate innovative takes on classic square slices, Corner Slice presents a compelling option in the New Jersey...

I didn’t know pizza could be like this. From my first bite I could tell this was going to be trouble for my wallet.

My wife is a huge supporter of Italian food and pizza of all sort. She’s tried for years to get me to eat more of it but nothing has worked as well as introducing me to restaurants like Artie’s, also nearby. And now this small shop.

Anyway back to this place: my wife found this through a food blogger. Apparently they used to be in NYC.

So today I ordered slices of pepperoni and buffalo. Wife got vodka and the unappetizingly named “garbage” (supreme or mix basically).

I thought this would be like a Sicilian or other deep dish pizza, with lots of dough and a lot of chewiness. But instead it was an airy light crispy bite. My eyes widened. Game over for local pizza for me, excepting Artie’s which is different anyway.

We ordered a side of the Calabrian hot peppers which actually have some heat and were a great addition to most of the slices.

The buffalo slice was one of my favorite versions. Not too heavy, scallions add to the taste. I’ll be ordering this next time for sure.

If I seem happy with this place I am! I’ve already told my brother in law to try it. We’ll...

In a state spoiled for choice with good pizza, Corner Slice still stands way above the rest. Imagine taking your favorite childhood pizzeria and having everything about it elevated to a level of perfection. These guys exist in a plane between dough science and sorcery. It's the light, crispy, satisfying dough that will capture your affection the first time around, but it's the flawlessly executed toppings that will keep you coming back over and over.

I can't emphasize enough: if these guys are doing a particular flavor — they are doing it exactly right. High quality ingredients (ask them about the pepperoni) in the perfect ratio, and you can trust that they toiled over the recipe in testing before ever letting you try it. With that in mind: ALWAYS TRY THE SPECIALS!

Beyond just the food, the entire space is so thoughtfully done and it shows. There's just the right amount of tables for everyone to be comfortable, tons of light, good music at just the right volume, fast, attentive service, and a bathroom that serves as a shrine to North Jersey pizza culture in an insane way.

Maplewood is lucky to have these guys because they would kill it with this vision absolutely anywhere...

This place is special for a variety of reasons, not least of which is the fact that we loved it so much when we lived in the city and then it somehow followed us here to Maplewood, which may just be the suburbanite’s ultimate dream. But really it’s the pizza. Oh my god the pizza. We can barely keep up with the specials, because each time a new one drops we have to drop everything and drive over to try it—which is a problem given that we’re already each devoted to our favorite slices (buffalo chicken and garbage for my husband and I, respectively), so our total pizza consumption winds up being pretty intense over the course of the week. Then they added the magical garlic knot loaf thing, so we’ve basically forsaken all other restaurants at this point. Also their instagram vibes are impeccable—I like a pizza place that posts reels of Sonic Youth for no reason at all—and their bathroom is charmingly insane. It’s a place that just makes us so HAPPY, you know? Extraordinarily inventive and delicious food, and a joyful atmosphere, and an evident interest in fostering a sense of community, at which it is already succeeding. We love Corner Slice so and wish it a long and happy Maplewood life. ❤️🍕
