I'm so thrilled Marshall has a new restaurant that isn't a chain or a fried chicken place. We came for lunch on Sunday (opening weekend.) My husband ordered the 1/2 order of chicken fried steak and some onion rings and I opted for 2 catfish fillets and fries. The portions were both generous and we shared bites because both dishes were divine. I'm originally a Marshallite and was visiting ETX and we ate at two other places in ETX both having chicken fried steak and fried fish...llama tell ya...NONE OF THE OTHER RESTAURANT'S DISHES EVEN CAME CLOSE to how good our fried fish and CFS were at Honey Hole. I'm a big ole foodie from home style cooking to fine dining and I truly believe if the good food says anything, I think Honey Hole can be a great success and wonderful addition to Marshall! They're just starting out so bear with them on the decor and design. Help them get their feet off the ground and I think everyone will be singing their praises.
Ok, but, real talk. Back to the food. Y'ALL! I think the last time I had good fried catfish was when Big Pines Lodge was open before the fire. This fish is LEGIT! It's local and most definitely not Asian (someone asked to see the box while we were there...can confirm, it's home grown and most definitely American.) The tarter sauce was slightly sweet and complimented the flavor of the breading on the fish beautifully. The onion rings...man, I don't even know how they get those things breaded so perfectly and flavorfully but they sure did! I was a voter for Cajun fries and thank gawd I did because they made the menu! 🙌 Y'all are welcome! 😉 I was stealing all my hubby's Chicken Fries Steak because I didn't even need a knife to cut it! My fork cut right through that tender CFS easy least lemon squeezy. I dunno what sorcery they use, but it's a dang good CFS! Oh, and last but not least...those (complimentary) PINTO BEANS! The first words out of my mouth to my table was, "I think these pinto beans are better than the ones I make!" For real, I might need to sneak in the kitchen and figure out the secret. Those things are GOOOOOOD!
I'm so glad I don't live in Marshall anymore. I'd probably gain 30 lbs quick! 🤣
Best of luck Honey Hole! That food speaks for itself! Y'all got a good group of people working there. I can't wait to come back and check out all the changes that come...

As you can see, I ordered the catfish, the shrimp was very tasty as was the batter however, if you just bit half of the shrimp, all the batter would fall off the entire shrimp and it was consistently that way with all. The catfish, while some of it was firm and crisp, a lot of my pieces were soggy so much so that when I bit into it, it was slimy. It was under cooked. The green beans looked like they came from a can; they had zero flavor! And a poor quality green bean. The hush puppies were super greasy and for some reason they fell apart when you just touch them. One of my biggest disappointments was the tartar sauce… throw that away. It really cannot be consumed. It was terrible.. the best thing that they had, IMO, were the free beans. They had little pieces of ground beef. The flavor was delicious. Everything about it was.
One of the guys I was with had the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes. Those mashed potatoes must’ve come straight from the box. They were overly watered. They had zero seasoning. It was bad on bad no flavor. Minimal salad bar, but I’m okay with that. I liked everything they offered.
Now, for the good part, the service was very quick. The servers were professional and nice, and our drinks were full the entire. The bathrooms were clean. The...
Read moreOur first opportunity to check out this little cafe for lunch. Entering the front door, you had a full view of the restaurant straight to the back wall as it was shaped in a rectangle with the shorts side at the front and back. We seated ourselves in a booth while taking in the fishing decor. After studying the menu, I decided on fish and my husband on a "sashquach" sandwich. Durring our meal, we watched a young man wearing a baseball cap come to the counter from the kitchen several times to chat. While doing so, he would pick up his hat, scratch his head and return to cooking food, or hand out a plate without washing his hands! When I paid for our meal I asked to speak to Becky but the manager insisted on helping me and proceeded to say that I didn't know what I was talking about. I asked for her name so I could let Becky know who I talked to when I call. Then she was ready to let me talk to Becky, and she was there... I replied I will call her at my convenience thank you and left. ☆Afterwards, I found a 3.5% additional fee charged to my credit card that I was not told about or asked before I used my card to...
