La Chula Express — Restaurant in McAllen

I accidentally stumbled upon this place last year and ordered a couple of breakfast tacos on flour tortillas, and started my drive back to Austin. I’m pretty prolific at eating tacos while driving so after my first bite of my chorizo and egg taco, I knew I was holding something special so I pulled over and slowly ate my tacos. I remember thinking about going back and buying more for the road, but I was already too far. Fast forward to my next trip to McAllen, and I couldn’t find it!!!! So on my current visit, my sister remembered me telling her it was on N 23rd, boom! Found it, taco time. I brought my son and he loved them too. I’m a chef, I’ve cooked for a president, politicians, I’ve cooked in LA, New York, Austin, blah, blah, and I hereby declare that this little place has the best tacos on the planet. The homemade chorizo & egg taco has the power to end climate change, global poverty, war, in fact if and when aliens from other planets make contact with earth, we should offer the chorizo & egg taco as a welcoming peace offering....

Went there this morning to buy tacos. Asked for a potato and egg taco in a corn tortilla and chorizo and egg in a flour tortilla. I've eaten the flour tortilla and they are excellent. Freshly made for you when you order them and not scooped out of a hot tray. I was surprised that the corn tortilla was a freshly made tortilla and not one of those cardboard tasting corn tortilla from the multi location taco company. The tacos are excellent and the service is very good. I haven't tried the menudo or their other items on the menu but I plan to take my family there for lunch try some menu items. I highly...

This place is SO GOOD. I was looking for something that I hadn’t tried before so I came to La Chula. Boy am I glad I did! It was early afternoon so it wasn’t all that busy. The waitress was very attentive. I ordered two tacos and they were ready in a flash - three minutes? Faster than the sign in the window says! - and they were so good. The pork in green salsa was amazing. I ate it so fast I forgot to take a picture. The carnitas taco was also delicious. The meat in both was tender and cooked just right.
