The food is always at least good, and often very good, so no problem there. Everything else is inconsistent. We live nearby and have both dined in and gotten takeout several times. Sometimes the service is good, and sometimes it's slow and clumsy. Sometimes the to-go order is ready in a few minutes, and other times I have to wait 20 minutes, even if I called it in and it took me a few minutes to get there. The phone numbers drive me crazy. The numbers on the menu are different from the ones that you find online, so if you don't happen to have a phone book or one of their menus handy you have to look it up online, which leads to a comedy of errors. There are at least three Casablanca restaurants in the Memphis area, and maybe more. You can't really tell from their websites. Last week, after several minutes of fumbling around online, I found what I believed to be their number. I dialed it and said that I wanted to place an order to pick up. The lady on the other end asked if I was trying to call the restaurant on Poplar (indicating that I wasn't the first person to make this mistake). Before I was finished saying, "No, I was trying to call the midtown location" she had already slammed the phone down. Unbelievably rude. If that many people are making the same mistake maybe you should do something about it. Here's a wild idea. All of the local Casablanca restaurants get their websites together, so that anyone who is looking for any of them go to the same landing page, where all of the addresses and phone numbers are outlined, and each has a link to their own respective page. How hard is that? You already know that the present system is costing you business on the front end, and now I am never going to the Casablanca on Poplar again. I really liked that place, and have eaten their often, but I will not reward that level of rudeness. I'm trying not to let that reflect on the midtown Casablanca, but they aren't the most personable people in the...
Read moreRecently, I came in for a work lunch for the first time in five years. It was easily of the worst meals the three of us have had in Memphis. The shwarma was greasy and overcooked with a taste that was reminiscent of frozen meat. Even drowning it in the sauces could not help improve the terrible flavor. The pita was doughy and way too thick to be considered traditional Mediterranean cuisine. Hummus had a peanut-like flavor to it and was much worse than even store bought brands. Falafel platter was almost $10 and only came with 4 pieces. The fries they serve as a side were walmart/kroger brand quality crinkle cut and cooked just barely before burnt with zero salt or seasoning. Finally, the spicy feta dip could have been eaten/drank with a straw, as if it was blended for 20 minutes or just watered down to stretch the product. For three people, we spent almost $80 for lunch, and we all felt sick the rest of the day. It is now a running joke how much we all hated the experience throughout our company.
All of this without mentioning the waitstaff is terribly unattentive. Did not greet us upon entering, did not check on refills, did not ask how the food was, did not bring a check, did not tell us we had to pay up front, did not split the check until we asked a second time, had to flag them down for everything because they walk by their tables without making eye contact to avoid having to work. Total time in the restaurant for a quick work lunch: 1 hour & 50 minutes. 70 minutes from sitting to getting food to table. We will be crossing this off the list permanently and patronizing Happy Greek / Petra / Castle / Flames / Grecian Gourmet or any other Mediterranean establishment before considering this disaster of a restaurant. -0/10, 0 stars, 0...
Read moreCasablanca has been a longtime favorite for me and my wife. My work lunch crew also goes occasionally. The service and food is always exceptional, but I wanted to share a particular experience from yesterday that was delightful.
We had a large work crew of about six (6) people. We were seated quickly and began making small talk about work and what not. I had my intern with me and I jokingly told her that she would receive a bad performance review for something that annoyed me. The server overheard me and I think mistakenly believed that we were intending to leave a review on the restaurant.
I just want to say, 1. I've had so many good experiences at Casablanca that I could never leave a bad review, but 2. After that, they were overly helpful, the owner even sent us a plate of falafel on the house! They were just as kind and gracious as always and we just had a wonderful experience so hats off to them.
Recommendations: Their falafel is wonderful, particularly the falafel "big mac" They do have the best sweet tea in Memphis. It is not traditional southern sweet tea, and I drink way too much every time I go. Their fettuccini alfredo is like a Mediterranean take on the dish with chicken shawarma meat . It is really good and comes in a huge portion.
To recap, they are wonderful, and you...
