I’ll admit that because the menu looked pretty basic on the surface, I was a little nervous to try Subarashi out. However, after reading some comments on Facebook from members of the Midsouth Lolita Group wanting to try out the restaurant, I decided to give it a try. I’m glad that I did.

Not only was the food better than I expected, the decor was adorable and homily. As for the people there, they were sweet and friendly.

For my order, which was a poke bowl and takoyaki with a side of free lemon water, I liked that the rice was seasoned with vinegar and that the bowl was deep. These elements made my order worth the money, especially since in the past, most poke bowls that I had didn’t have quality ingredients in them or made you feel like you were going on a treasure hunt. I liked that this restaurant put more thought into both the presentation and quality of their poke bowls so that they feel like ā€œdesign-you-own-sushi-bowls.ā€ As for the takoyaki, while it wasn’t served on a bed of lettuce or greens like at previous Japanese restaurants, the poke bowls made these famous Japanese street food worthwhile to eat. Finally, for the lemon water, I’m so glad that it’s free! I have borderline pre-diabetes currently so I often feel uncomfortable feeling full from eating foods with lots of refined carbs and/or sugar in them.

While I would like to see brown rice, boba teas made with actual fruits and vegetables, and homemade tapioca pearls on the menu in the future, overall, I feel that coming to Subarashi was worth me having to go through lunch traffic after attending Japanese Culture Club.

I can’t wait to bring my boyfriend, Matt McClain, here soon, along with a friend here...

Ordered sushi here through ubereats and it was the worst take out I've ever gotten. Spent $50 on sushi: two cucumber rolls, crunchy spicy tuna roll, crunchy shrimp roll, salmon roll, spicy tuna roll plus a side of fries. Read the reviews so assumed we would get great sushi. The rice was hard on each roll. But that wasn't the worst part. The quality of fish was terrible. The tuna had a bunch of fat and looks like they just put the worst left over piece and end pieces of tuna into each roll. The salmon was mushy and fishy tasting. We threw all of the rolls away. My son said the fries were disgusting which is surprising because he will eat fries from anywhere. That's the only time I've ever thrown food away. The quality was...

I go to Subarashi for a quick meal pretty often as a UofM student. When I first started going I didn't have any problems, but more recently, I always end up paying for extra toppings that don't make it onto my poke bowl. As someone with dietary restrictions, this is very frustrating for me because I get the veggie bowl, and am hoping to taste everything I asked for. I even resorted to checking my bowls before leaving, but it's hard to catch everything because all the ingredients lie on top of/near each other. I love the customer service, and the new owner is super nice and responsive - I just want to trust that what I pay for is what i get without having to check every time, esp. since I fill out that...

Cute little place to have a meal. I usually do pick up orders but decided to dine in with friends recently. It was a Friday around 3PM and there were only a few other customers. Love that they offer eel as a protein option for their poke bowls. I typically get a combo of eel/squid. I’ve tried tuna/salmon once, but I feel like other places do it better. I would give it another chance with a different sauce pairing in the future. I recommend their tiramisu milk tea and their lychee lemon plum tea, both at half sugar. The red bean taiyaki is pretty good as well. We thought their choice in music was a bit odd. It seemed like a mix of 2010s pop songs remixed or covered.

My friends and I were visiting Memphis for the weekend and decided to visit Subarashi because they offered poke bowls and sushi. Not only do they let you build your own from scratch, but they have a diverse menu to choose from and great customer service too. The restaurant was cozy and clean. Bonus: when you choose a poke bowl, you can fill it out on a piece of paper and hand it to the cashier, which is great for people like me who get nervous when ordering. My friends and I had a great experience and loved the environment, staff, and food here. We'll definitely be eating here again!
