Fortune Cookie Restaurant — Restaurant in Menomonie

I was introduced to this little gem when I was attending UW-Stout from a friend of mine way back in 2008. It’s a small restaurant next to a Subway. I was skeptical the first time I came to this place, but it quickly became a favorite of mine and my friends. I’ve been here dozens of time. Keep in mind, this is a Chinese takeout restaurant. Don’t expect Michelin star quality food. This is perfect for some cheap, tasty, and greasy food after a night of cramming for an exam, drinking, or late night snack.

My favorite dish is the spicy house lo mein w/ no onions lunch special. It’s got a combination of meats: chicken, pork, and shrimp. It comes served with very generic fried rice. The lunch special is served all day. I think the lo mein noodles are made in house because I haven’t been able to find a Chinese restaurant that serves these types of noodle anywhere. They are thinner and have the perfect amount of bite to it. Not too soft or firm. Sometimes I like to augment the dish with some soy sauce and duck sauce. However, it’s totally unnecessary because the dish is flavorful by itself. Another dish that I enjoy is the aromatic chicken. It’s breaded chicken, deep fried, and then mixed with some sweet and salty sauce. It’s way better than your typical general tso’s chicken. I haven’t been able to find this dish anywhere either. I’ve never had a bad experience with the food and it’s always consistent to what I am expecting. The portions are huge for the low price that you pay.

The service is okay. This place mainly employs Stouties (UW-Stout students) that is just doing this as a part time job while attending college. They also only except cash so make sure you come prepared if you want to eat here. I’ve been out of college for a while now and no longer in the area. What a mess! I have never had such a problem with take out orders. My girlfriend and I wanted to try fortune cookie for the first time because we heard good things, but what a terrible mistake. The man that answered to take our order sounded extremely uninterested and acted like it was an inconvenience to be on the phone (doing his job) taking our order. He also rushed the call which caused confusion with the order number. Once we got to the restaurant to pick up our order, I made it very clear that I was not sure which number my order was out of two numbers. She only checked for one of the order numbers which made me assume the other one wasn’t even there so I assumed it was right. She said the total was 16, but the guy on the phone told me my total was 26 so I mentioned that too her. She immediately affirmed this was the right order so I took it. Once we got home, we got a call saying WE took the wrong order. So we turned back around with the food we were given. When I got there, I was expecting to have to give them the wrong order back and then only pay the difference for my order. She had a different idea she wanted to make me pay the total of the wrong order and my own order when I wanted to give her back the wrong order and only pay for the food I wanted. She made it seem like the whole incident was our fault which it definitely was a little bit for not remembering our order number exactly, but she had multiple chances to double check to make sure she was giving us the correct order. Especially when we clearly stated what was in our order and the one she checked and gave us was completely something else. Don't get me wrong the food is mediocre But, their Customer Service stinks!!! As i was on the phone with them cancelling an order they were talking disrespectful to me. The young female gave the phone to a man and he was very rude talking to me. More so yelling over the phone. I have placed an order with them before and it had a pubic hair in it. Not just that, they were an hour late twice!! I will take my business elsewhere and maybe they should get the FDA involved.
