Pleasant surprise with this hidden gem, great food and friendly service is two of their strong points, along with respectable prices and good portions. The appetizers were delicious 1. Spinach dip A great creamy and cheesey dish served with bread. Great flavor and truly a good starter. 2. Bruschetta Fresh and tasty tomatoes and herbs presented nicely with the dish. There is a nicr sweet and acidic flavor that holds count well with the provided bread. The new York strip was flavorful and cooks exactly to specifications of medium rare, the combinations of marinade and seasonings were truly on point and provided a great tasting piece of meat. Normally who really cares about the vegetables that comes along with a steak? I would think that would be a majority of people, but trust me it's different here. The vegetables that come along with the steak must be flavored with the tears of angels because they were some of the best mixed vegetables to pair with the potatoes to round the meal out. This is not garnish people lol It's worth it to try. The UC Merced burger was perfectly cooked and well complemented with a soft crusty bun that soaked up the juices from the burger. There was thick crisp bacon along with the cheese and a generous portion of avocado to top the burger off. The quiet MVP would really be the french fries that comes with the burger, these are not your bad fast food fries lol They are truly hot, crispy, delicious and just with the right hint of salt. Overall this is a really good restaurant and worth your hard-earned dollar, so please don't hesitate and pass them thinking that you can't have a great dining experience that doesn't require a tuxedo and a ball gown. So remember to enjoy the ride, appreciate the meal, and make it the best.

DO NOT GO! We just had the worst dining experience here that we've had in a very long time. Me, my spouce, her father, brother, brother's girlfriend, and her grandparents reserved a table at Table 59 for 5:30PM to celebrate her grandparents 56th anniversary. We walked in to an empty restaurant and waited an an unstaffed front desk. Once someone arrived, they ushered us to a table and sat us with menus. We then waited 10 minutes to receive our first greeting from who I would later learn was the owner/manager of the restaurant. He brought us waters and we sat and chatted for another 10 minutes before he came back to take our orders.

We all ordered and sat again until bread was brought to our table 11 minutes later, squished as if someone used a dull butter knife to cut the slices. It was at least warm. Another 38 minutes went by before our food arrived. I ordered the chopped Italian salad, which was supposed to have salami, pepperinccini, and artichoke hearts in it, but I found only 1 heart, 2 pepperinccinis total, and what looked like 2 flat pieces of lunchmeat style salami cut into tiny squares. I paid $17 for this. And the size was that of a side salad, masked in a large bowl. My spouce ordered the Table 59 burger and we literally laughed when it arrived. The patty was a full inch smaller in circumfrance than the bun all the way around. The bun made it look twice the size it actually was.

The waiter/manager/owner took so long between water refills that one of our guests actually went outside to his vehicle at one point to go drink some water from his personal water bottle.

Once we were finished we had to flag the waiter down for boxes, then flag him down again for our checks. Of course he was very quick to run our cards and get the receipts back to us, which is when we first noticed the 18% gratuity added to all three of our checks. Not once was it mentioned to our party that this was going to occur, and normally we'd all be happy to tip this amount, except we had all just had to endure a terrible experience. At this point we all rolled our eyes and agreed we'd never be returning and we'd be spreading the word of our experience. We left Table 59 at 7:29pm; 2 full hours after arriving. No appetizers, no dessert, still took 2 full hours.

I decided that once I got home I'd call and speak to a manager just to leave some verbal feedback of our poor experience. The manager I was passed to turned out to be our waiter, who revealed that he was the manager only at this point. He was very standoffish, defensive, and nonchalant about the feedback I was providing. At this point I asked if he had someone above him, since there was no point in complaining to the person who caused the issues in the first place. I asked for his boss and he disappeared from the other line for several minutes. When he returned, the woman who first answered was on the other line. I asked her if she was the person I spoke to first when asking for a manager and she said yes. I then asked what her role was and she explained that the man I was previously speaking to was the owner/manager and she was the assistant manager. Obviously I was confused since I asked for his boss and instead of him telling me he was the owner, he passed me off to his subordinate.

Needless to say, I wasn't surprised that someone working an empty restaurant, providing terrible service, being defensive about feedback provided in a calm and concerned manner would not have the character or pride to reveal that he was in fact in charge. We will not be returning and I will be telling everyone that will listen about how rude the owner is, how mediocre the food was, and how slow and unresponsive the staff are. It is really unfortunate too, because the atmosphere of that restaurant...

Seriously surprised by the good reviews as our experience was just short of walking out. We will start by not being able to find the place based on the fact their logo is pale, the number 59 is divided by a ribbon of other words. We remembered DiCiccios (sp?) used to be that spot, so wa-la! If it hadn't been for that, we would never have found them. Two quiet little open signs decorate the side windows and all the doors and windows are foiled up, no light gets through. Once inside, fresh paint smacks you in the face. Nice. Seated in one of their booths with a friend, no problem. Ordering, no problem. The bread, once probably 4" tall had been cut, smashed, squished down to a brief 1". The chef needs a bread knife, people. The aroma of the bread made up for the impacted dough that quickly turned cold and hard. Ok, then comes the salads. Romaine is good, but it could use some complimentary greens. Blah bleu cheese. Then comes the entrees, two chicken marsalas, one linguini and clams. My chicken was so tough I could not cut it let alone fork it, and returned it promptly. Loving salmon, I thought I would give that a try. Nope. Chefs of America? Do NOT cook salmon with thyme. Just don't do it. The staff get a half a point for taking my meals off the bill, I went home to grab some left overs while I type this up. Another half a point for seriously nice silverware which is immediately taken away by the raw can't-be-eaten vegetables. If I can't fork the broccoli, I am not going to be able to eat it. Hub said on the way home that while his chicken was softer than mine, yet the taste was horrendous. Keep in mind his nickname is Micky, he'll eat anything. Our friend did say her meal was, "Ok" but the teensy clams, well, were not enough to soothe her appetite. We rate restaurants, and this gets a minus points for food, ease of locating, bread, plus for silverware, removing bad food from the bill. Service gets zero as it was as expected. Minus 1. So, we won't...
