We had a 2 week trip from Alabama to Arizona and back and this is the last place we will be stopping at to eat before we get back home. We wanted something "local", and that is what we have been doing from State to State across the country. We heard "soul food", and since it was 3pm and we had not had lunch, we were hungry to the soul. We also read the great reviews right here on Google. We stepped in, and heard an immediate "Good afternoon, how are yall?". I am guessing this is "Mom", and immediately we felt warm, wanted, and cared about. Well, I don't have have enough time to really write this the way I would like to, as we are in the parking lot and need to get on the road, but:
The service was kind and super friendly, and they didn't mind giving me menu advice. We ordered both the baked chicken and the turkey wings. Yes wings. I didn't even know to add that to my bucket list, yet there it was.... We had black eyed peas, collard greens, mashed potatoes, and cornbread along with the proteins. The chicken was perfect, very tender and very flavorful. The meat fell off the bone. The turkey wing was my order and I liked it even more than the chicken. It was GOOD, and now I think something else to add to my list of "foods I love". The collards were AMAZING. There was no bitterness, and they don't use pork and meat in their veggies. It was clean, yet juicy and SO GOOD. The mashed potatoes blew me away. They were full of flavor and also not drenched with butter as you so often see. They were homemade and GREAT, and the cornbread was soft, fluffy, and only had just a touch of sweetness. They were perfect actually. Not dry at ALL, and thats not easy to pull off. That leads me to the BLACK EYED PEAS. They are the best I have ever had. This, and I eat black eyed peas anytime I see them or can easily eat them. They were soft, flavorful, perfectly seasoned, and once again, had no pork or meat in them so they were "clean" while having the best flavor I have ever tasted for black eyed peas.
What a way to end our trip. I told the man helping with our order about how much we enjoyed the food and how impressed I was with a few things, he smiled a big smile and said "Thank you, I will tell my Mom". That just struck us as really precious. My wife noticed a scripture on the wall as we were leaving. It was Isaiah 54:17 "No weapon formed against you shall prosper". That explained a LOT about this place. I believe they have likely stood on that scripture for a long time and that's why this business will stand the test of time and everything thrown at it. Thank you SO MUCH for showing us not only an amazing meal, but some simple kindness and love we didn't necessarily feel down in...

Read moreIn the 38 years of owning my own trucks and being an over-the-road driver and the simple fact that I'm out of Houston, Texas so I know what good food is supposed taste like. We all have differences in opinions when it comes to what we favor or what we desire. Me I'm not particularly a seafood guy, but you might favor it. So I can't tell you what to order, I can only review what I had. The baked chicken and gravy over a bed of rice, blackeyed peas, string beans, and cornbread, with a slice of sweet potatoe pie. Now, I'm not quite sure who's grandmother that they have kidnapped in the kitchen and chained to an oven... and no, I didn't take any pics because I was too busy eating and falling asleep! But not before I tried that sweet potatoe pie...SMFH. If you are ever in the Meridian Mississippi area, do yourself a solid and do not deny yourself this pleasurable dining experience. THE BEST...
