Great food and atmosphere: GO TO NEW'S.
We started at Cracker Barrel: 45 minute wait with only about a third of the dining area occupied. My guess is gift shop sales are down and what better way to boost that than by forcing people to linger in the hall of kitsch while they wait to be seated. A quick search on Google led us to New's. After driving through neighborhoods that looked like sets from the movie "The Help", we found it. The parking lot was full, especially considering it was a Thursday night which was a very good sign. We walked in and were told to pick an open table and Katie would be with us in a minute. The menu was full of southern delicacies like turnip greens, sweet potato casserole, rice and gravy, baked chicken, hamburger steak, steamed cabbage, cornbread... And the prices were great. In summation, the food was out quickly and was great. Katie was a outstanding waitress - she kept our water and sweet tea glasses full and was fun to visit with. If you're passing through Meridian, drive past the chains and head to New's. The drive will be a fraction of the wait at the chains and you will enjoy and remember...
Read moreThis has become our favourite place to go out to eat in Meridian when we do a date night. I'm saying this after we have explored most of the restaurants in Meridian (I'm from Orlando). Everyone there is so friendly, pleasant, and down to earth. They express genuine gratitude and graciousness to all their customers. The restaurant itself is very comfortable and welcoming in its design.
The food is downright AMAZING. Generous portions of genuine homestyle southern cooking, and if they cut any corners in the way restaurants typically do, I certainly can't tell. The mashed potatoes are pleasantly lumpy, the greens are stewed with pork, the corn muffins are baked in buttered pans, and the green tomatoes are battered in just the right amount of seasoned flour and fried til they're perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.
The pricing is standard - it's not noticeably cheap, but not very expensive, either.
This restaurant exemplifies the best of southern homestyle cooking in an environment that is aesthetically southern, and it's served by folks who showcase what southern manners and hospitality are...
Read moreHeaded home to PA from NOLA we stopped by this sweet little local spot for lunch on a Wednesday. We enjoyed our time here, the food was lovely. I had the chicken and dumplings with cabbage and corn and husband had the shrimp wrap and fries. We shared a piece of black bottom pie for dessert that I won’t soon forget. The restaurant was full of lovely antique touches including salved tin from the local opera house. Everyone was super kind and welcoming. Hopefully we’ll make it back through Meridian to visit this 86 year old institution again someday. If you’re passing through stop here… no fast food, get a real meal from...
