EDIT 6 28 25 Charlie's Diner: My Rocky Relationship with Burnt Pancakes and Bad Math As a man of my word, I returned to Charlie's Diner on a Saturday, hoping for a more pleasant experience after my last visit. I looked at the menu beforehand and knew exactly what I wanted: the Charlie Brown special. I asked the server if I could substitute regular blueberry pancakes (understanding there would be an upcharge for the blueberries) instead of the potato pancakes that came with the Charlie Brown. She confirmed this was fine, mentioning they had just added potato pancakes to the menu. Great, I thought, no problem with the substitution. When my food arrived, the eggs were cooked fine, but unfortunately, the home fries were still bland and lacked flavor. To top it off, my pancakes were burnt again. So, the food, regrettably, remains consistently mediocre. The real issue began when I asked for the bill. I was charged for a completely different meal, with a grand total of $22, far more than the $10 I expected for the Charlie Brown with a pancake substitution. When I questioned this, the owner chimed in, rather aggressively, stating, "you didn't order the Charlie Brown, you order blueberry pancakes." I explained that I did order the Charlie Brown and simply substituted the pancakes, and that my server had confirmed it would be fine. The owner's response was, "just give him the Charlie Brown and get him out of here, I don't want to see him again." Another server then chimed in, stating, "yeah, we never do this, it's never a substitution." I apologized but reiterated that I had confirmed with my server that it was okay. Even though they eventually corrected the bill, they made it very clear they were angry and unhappy about the situation, making me feel very unwelcome. So, unfortunately, my original statement still stands: the food is decent but not great. More importantly, watch what you order and ensure everything is black and white, especially regarding substitutions and pricing. If there's any ambiguity, clarify with the cook or owner directly, not just the server. Charlie's Diner remains mediocre in my book. Eat there at your own risk.
Charlie's Diner: Classic Feel, Mixed Plate I finally made it to Charlie's Diner, and it definitely has a lot going for it! This cute, super clean spot really nails that old-school diner vibe, but with a modern touch. The server and chef were both incredibly nice, and the atmosphere was just lovely. Now, about the food. I ordered two blueberry pancakes and an Irish omelet, with a side of home fries. The Irish omelet and home fries were just okay – not bad, not great, and a bit lacking in flavor for my taste. Unfortunately, my blueberry pancakes were overcooked. I'm really not one to complain, especially when the service is so wonderful, but it definitely impacted the flavor of the pancakes. My biggest negative, though, was the price discrepancy. I always check the menu online beforehand to plan my order. It showed the breakfast at $10.99, but when I ordered this morning, it was up by $2. It's not a huge difference, but if you're on a budget or planning your finances in advance, that can be a little disappointing. Overall, if you're looking for an average breakfast served by some wonderful people in a nice atmosphere, Charlie's Diner is worth checking out. I always give places a second chance, so I'll definitely be back to try some different menu items and will update my...
Read moreA small, very small, privately owned Diner in the middle of Merrimack. Charlie's has been around for quite some time and is a local Hangout. If you're interested in our simple breakfast simple lunch you won't be disappointed by this classic Small Town Diner. Don't expect anything fancy. Charlie's is basic diner food with a basic limited menu oh, but what they do they do well.
A few things to be aware of if you are thinking of visiting Charlie's. First it is very small so it is frequently quite crowded. There are no boots, all the seating is tables for 4. Parking can be limited. Wait staff are friendly and accommodating. The kitchen and grill are small, and right there with you in the restaurant area. So expect service to take a little bit of time when it's crowded.
This is not the place to come if you're interested in a really fast in and out dining experience. Rather it's the place to come when you want to sit around the table enjoy a good breakfast of eggs or pancakes and great conversation over a...
Read moreLived in Merrimack for a long time, but first time we went here. The three of us went for a late breakfast on Sunday. Food was terrific. Being a Sunday it was a little busy, but got seated right away. The place is a bit small, and you can always sit at the counter if you don’t want to wait for a table. We’ve been to DW Diner many times, which is just down the street, but I prefer Charlie’s over it now. Service was very friendly and nice. Really felt like a local place that would know your name if you came regularly. I got the meatloaf omelette (which may sound unique) but it was really good. The home fries were the best I’ve had. My son has biscuits and gravy with poached egg on top. That was awesome. The pancakes are nice and thick too. All in all… I loved it, and will definitely...
