Read moreI’ve been coming to Cornish Pasty since the mid-90’s,first at the Tempe location and for the last few years to Dobson Road, mainly because it just lot more convenient, but my recent visit is going to have to be my last. When this concept began,it was a novel, exciting addition to the dining scene in the Valley. There was simply nothing else like it and with all the variety on the menu, there was something for everyone, spread across several genres and ethnic profiles. The place crackled with excitement and there was frequently a wait of 30-45 minutes or more.It was worth it because it was just that good. The service was top notch.
Those days are gone.I went back today and was shocked (and saddened) at what I found.
It should have been a clue that at the height of the lunch hour, there were only about a dozen people in the place.I’d never just walked in and got a table at lunch before. There was no one outside on the veranda and it was a beautiful day, so this was another hint that maybe something was a little off.
We got seated and were never offered a drink choice. We got water and that that was pretty much that. The ordering was very frustrating when the menu items I wanted were not available.Like a lot of customers, I have favorites that are my go-to choices.”I’m sorry, but we don’t have that today” greeted my first three requests. (Can they not print up a menu that only lists what is on offer that day? Have computers and cheap printers not been invented yet?) So instead of continuing to ask for things that I couldn’t have,we did it Soviet Union style and I let the waiter tell me what he could sell me. I finally got the meatball Italian pasty.
Big mistake. Burned on the outside, it was also too hot inside to enjoy. The marinara dipping sauce was tasteless and obviously canned,so there was not much flavor to be had this day.I had remembered the crust being softer and chewy, but this was hard as a cracker on the outside and black as coal from the overbaking so it broke up when I cut it.The filling was foodservice-grade Italian sausage, a little cheese and some basil.Dry, tough and with no real flavor to speak of,I basically paid $20 for an overcooked Hot Pocket.
And the portion size has suffered from the shrink ray effect of inflation as well. In fact, a lady at the table behind me commented on how they were charging more for less and the waiter did admit that the pasties are “about 2/3rds the size they were before”,so caveat emptor, I guess.
Bottom line- This place is living on reputation. You can get much more value just about anywhere else for what they charge here.I won’t be back and I hope your experience is...
Read moreI never would have seen this place driving by. The sign on the building is covered by Vining plants. I found it by using Google maps to see if there was anything interesting to take home to eat in the (largish) plaza I was shopping in.
1st oddity was the hard to identify spot. 2nd, separate doors for take out and dine in not set up very well with a kind of cattle chute for carry out people to queue in with no seating. 3rd we opted to wait outside rather than the narrow space inside. The tables had a thick coat of dust and there were spiderwebs all over the place. I know it's hot & the dust blows but this was not maintained. 4th A bunch of the items including all 3 of the pasties we decided on when looking at the menu were out (bangers and mash, adovada and salmon) As well as 2 of the appetizer choices (chicken liver pate & scotch egg). They were out of many more things that weren't on our radar as well when we started discussing back up choices.
The server was nice and the service took a reasonable amount of time. She gave us waters while we waited. We got the cornish meatball & spanakopita pasty appetizers. For main we got 2 pasties chicken pot pie and shepherds pie. 1 dessert the sticky toffee Pudding. The appetizers were very good and so was the dessert. Definitely worth returning for. We were both disappointed in our pasties. They were good but not the fantastic flavors we hoped for. The pastry was excellent on the pasty as well as the accompanying sauces, it was really just those fillings. No true complaints about the quality just not as good as we hoped.
I would have had thought they would have been more prepared for a Saturday evening dinner rush (it was about 5pm when we went).
I'd definitely return. The atmosphere looked welcoming inside so I would dine in and maybe do some research to find out when they have more or better options on the pasties. Mediocre 1st impression but I'm sure they...
