We must have done something wrong here as Del Barrio has so many high star reviews but that was not our experience.
1st, very different experience based on where you sit. We were a party of 2 during a busy time. We were put at a 2 top a few inches away from other 2 person tables. We could hear EVERY word the tables next to us said and I'm sure everything we said was heard by them.
2nd, the menu/value. This is my own fault but I still hold them accountable for the inconsistency. Waiter asked if we wanted chips and salsa, which is included, we said yes, he then asked if we wanted cheese (queso dip) with those. Chips were still free but queso was $12. I also added chili verde to my birria burrito which cost an additional $4.50. I asked for melted cheese and that was left out. Both of us ordered burritos and for the base price the portions are fair but careful adding anything to it.
3rd, food quality. The chips and queso was really good, but still not anywhere close to $12+ good. But the burritos were mostly refried beans that were extremely bland. We're talking sub Taco Bell quality beans. Picture showed maybe 20% beans in the burritos, additionally beans were listed as the 3rd/4th ingredient in the burritos but both of our burritos were 80% bean and very little meat. Imagine the beans from 2 Taco Bell bean and cheese burritos, with out the onions and red sauce, packed into a larger tortilla with a little bit of beef sprinkled in and that was the burritos we got.
So after getting a bill for $50 (only 1 soda ordered) and below Taco Bell quality, I felt it was my moral imperative to warn others. I'm not saying don't go here, as I'm sure they have some good food there or there wouldn't be so many great reviews but we sure didn't find anything worth...
Read moreYour food is always incredible but your service, the last few times, has been more and more tense? They're simple miscommunications that aren't handled in the best way. The tone and clear annoyance with the two guys working the front counter on 1/4/25 came out of nowhere.
All I did was correct them on the name of the pickup order. They couldn't find my order because the name they were looking for was not the name on the order. It was similar sounding. (Example: looking for Ryan when it's Bryan.)
But when I corrected him he shrugged his shoulders and goes "I don't know. We didn't place the order."
I'm not sure if he thought I said something else? I was just giving him the name on the order. They'd whisper amongst themselves. And when I tried to explain again that they're looking for the wrong name they just looked at each other, deep sighed, and continued to whisper to themselves as they looked around. The guy again goes "Ryan, ryan.. i dont know! I didnt make the order!!" Me: "It's Bryan." They finally realized what I was trying to explain the whole time and found the order. They didn't hide the annoyance in their tone or facial expressions the entire interaction.
I came to your restaurant excited to eat your food and enjoy a night in with my sister. And I left your restaurant feeling small.
I've worked the food industry and people can suck - I get it. Which is why I try to be understanding and kind when I'm a patron. But I've experienced these moments of unnecessary tension and feeling like I'm unwelcome a few times now. Just be...
Read moreThis might be my new favorite Mexican restaurant in Salt Lake, though it's a close call between this and La Casa Del Tamal. We like it even better than Red Iguana yet it's not as expensive as Red Iguana.
The quality is great and there are lots of vegetarian and vegan options.
Favorite dishes of ours are the Birria tacos and the Baja fish tacos. I like the Birria enchiladas too but the Mango Enmoladas are even better.
The only two things I wasn't impressed with were the rice and beans. They're not bad at all, just mediocre compared to everything else we have eaten here.
The horchata is the best I've ever had! And the Habanero lemonade and the Mojito lemonade are both delicious, though I think I would like them even better as limeade.
The flan here is good too but not any more amazing than elsewhere. I'd like to try the tres leches cake next time to see how it compares to other restaurants.
We also got Carlos' Macho Nachos without sour cream and they were so good. The only thing I would add to improve it would be a little cotija cheese, and maybe some kind of spicy sauce too.
This restaurant is small in a cozy way and always busy but we have never had to wait more than 10 or 15 minutes. It's perfectly clean, including the bathrooms.
Be aware that parking is limited but we haven't had too much difficulty...
