Been driving by this place for 5 years and should've continued to do so. To make a stressful day a bit more brighter, my husband and I decided to go out for dinner and give this place a shot. As you walk in, it feels like you've been taken back into the 80s, ridiculously outaded chairs, vynyl tablecloths with felt bottom, plastic cups for drinks and my favorite red rose bouquets everywhere you look. On the walls displayed old fishing gear and accessories. I'm an avid fisherwoman and an angler myself. With that being said, I appreciate antique fishing gear and what's displayed deserves a better way of presentation and doesn't sit well with fabric rose bouquets. Design Solutions: Remove rose bouquets, remove/upgrade vynyl tablecloths, upgrade plastic cups with glass, update all cutlery to heavier gaige and the least wash all the windows from outside. Replace dusty window curtains with wooden shades, update chairs and tables with industrial/rustic, wooden benches.
Our waitress was wonderful, welcoming, friendly, sympothatic and sweet! I ordered Baked Haddock with two sides (vegetable medley, red potatoes and a Lobster Bosque/Clam Chowder soups as an upgrade instead of salad). My husband ordered Salmon and the two sides. I was very displeased with the presentation of my dish. The fish was baked so the topping (breadcrumbs) was slapped on top of the fish which got soggy and mushy. In both of our orders red potato sides were hard as rock, simply undercooked. Our waitress did offer to replace my side of red potatoes, I choose not to get replacements for personal safety reason. The best that was offered, remove soup upgrade and offer a free drink which came out to $6. My order was $18.95 and my husband's was $22.95 but never offered to remove the charge for my husband's order. Best part of our dinner was interacting with our waitress but in terms of presentation and taste of the food which is priced high we weren't pleased with. The overall atmosphere of the establishment was not impressive, unfortunately we're not coming back and not planning to bring...
Read moreI read all the reviews. I've had others recommend Balch's. So, a desire for some seafood and less than a mile from the house led me there.
Maybe it was an off time. The restaurant was not crowded by any measurement. However, the service was terrible and the food not a whole lot better.
We sat for ten minutes before someone just dropped a basket of chips off. Then another 5 minutes before the waitress came over to ask what we would like to drink and "oh, are you ready to order?" (No good evening, sorry for waiting, etc.) We ordered and it was over 45 minutes from being seated before the entree was served. An appetizer and salad was served before the main course, which was quite ordinary. I would rate it possibly a hair over diner quality.
No one inquired how the meal was during or afterwards. The waitress came over and asked if we were through. I said yes and I would like the check. She returned, dropped the check on the table and started to walk away when I asked her to take it and handed her a credit card. The waitress returned and said "they don't take Discover." I handed her another card, and this time when she came back, she drops the check on the table telling me "fill out the top copy and the rest is yours", and then walks away. No one ever said thank you or have a good evening. It was obvious we were an interruption of the staff's day.
I will promise we won't be an interruption to...
Read moreThey open with a basket of stale nacho chips and an UNremarkable combination of cream cheese and horseradish dip. The order was for the single crabcake dinner. (It's supposed to be a seafood restaurant.) The small plate of salad was swimming in cheap, bottled blue cheese dressing. More was expected of the dinner itself. The garlic mashed potatoes are INSTANT POTATOES with some garlic power/salt thrown in. (Sloppily piping it on the plate did nothing for the taste of the instant potato.) The green beans with bits of red pepper were greasy and unseasoned, which brings me to the biggest disappointment -- the thin, tiny crab cake. They couldn't (or wouldn't) provide a dill horseradish sauce. So much disappointment for more than $20. Very sad.
The decor is mediocre, but the hundreds of spiders on the windows (yes, hundreds) were even more frightening.
The original trappings of paper from the straw in the water, salad plate with fork, leftover nachos and plastic dip cup, remained on the table through the whole meal. It was too much to expect for this visit to be better than the previous culinary nightmare experienced eating there. We won't make the same mistake a third time. TRULY DISAPPOINTING AT BEST AND...
