I had visited this restaurant shortly after it opened and was impressed at the time. Unfortunately, on this recent visit, it seems they’ve grown complacent and are now relying more on their reputation than on delivering a quality dining experience.
From the outset, things felt off. Although I was told there would be a 15-minute wait, we were seated almost immediately. The host’s extremely slow pace walking us to our table was odd and set a strange tone for the rest of the visit.
Our server arrived with an unusually deep, almost performative voice that felt more theatrical than genuine. The dining area itself was uncomfortably cold—something worth noting for anyone sensitive to overly aggressive air conditioning.
My niece ordered an iced mocha, and the server oddly suggested she try chocolate mixed with coffee instead. She agreed, though confused, and unfortunately found the drink undrinkable after just one sip.
For food, I ordered the classic eggs Benedict, my nephew ordered French toast with bacon, and my niece also ordered pancakes. The French toast and bacon were the only items that seemed to meet expectations.
My eggs Benedict, however, was a disappointment. The eggs were overcooked, and when I raised the issue, the server didn’t take the plate back but instead brought me two separate small bowls—one with poached eggs and another with lukewarm hollandaise sauce. Additionally, the ham in the Benedict was extremely salty to the point of being inedible. At \$17, I essentially paid for some hash browns and a few salty bites of ham.
The pancakes were fluffy but overwhelmed with powdered sugar—far too sweet for my niece, who only managed to eat half of one.
The total bill came to around \$70 for three people, which felt excessive given the overall quality and satisfaction with the meal.
I politely asked the server if anything could be done to adjust the bill. This is where things took a turn from awkward to truly uncomfortable. The manager came to the table and, rather than addressing me directly, chose to speak to my teenage niece, questioning her about why she didn’t like the coffee. While she did agree to remove that item from the bill, the tone and approach felt confrontational and inappropriate.
When she finally addressed me about the eggs Benedict, her attitude was dismissive. Despite my 20+ years of experience as a chef, she spoke to me in a condescending manner, insisting that since they don’t salt their eggs, there couldn’t have been an issue—missing the point entirely, as my concern was the ham, not the eggs. She mentioned the ham is brined in-house, which might explain the strong flavor, but that detail is not disclosed on the menu, and the resulting taste was simply unpleasant for me. She refused to adjust the bill or offer any resolution beyond a vague promise to “tell the chef.”
Overall, this was a disappointing and uncomfortable experience. The quality of food and service no longer matches the early promise of this restaurant, and the lack of professionalism in handling feedback made things worse. For the price, you’d be better off elsewhere—I certainly wish...
Read moreTo start, we only had a 15 minute wait vs the 25 minute wait we were told. So that was nice. We were seated for roughly 5 minutes before our server came and brought water. My wife and I ordered two hot lattes to start our brunch. Hers came out hot, mine came out room temp - if that.
I ordered the calzone omelet, with extra crispy hash browns with cheese and onions, and a side of bacon with sourdough toast. She ordered the Florentine Benedict with the EVOO skinny hash browns.
My hash browns were AMAZING - literally cooked perfect. The jam they included with the toast was delectable too. The bacon was nice and crispy. However, the calzone omelet was absolutely abhorrent - one of the most disgusting things I’ve eaten in ages. I took two bites and sent it back because I couldn’t handle the dog food flavor of it. My wife agreed that it was egregiously disgusting.
My wife’s eggs on her Benedict were over cooked (a little past over medium instead of poached), and there was barely any hollandaise sauce included. She was happy with her hash browns. I tried them and they were pretty good.
Overall, I wouldn’t go back here again as the only good things were the sides. The main courses were simply unacceptably cooked.
To my servers credit, she did take back my luke warm latte and bring me a hot one, and she did take 50% off of my plate. My server was pleasant enough.
Overall, not worth the $50+ I spent here. I’ve been to places that cost half that and had double the flavor and correctly cooked food.
The overall lack of culinary precision from a James Beard award winning restaurant was surprising. It definitely deterred me from ordering anything from the bakery.
There’s other brunch places in the area that are worth going to. Overall, this one isn’t. It was kinda packed and relatively loud, to the point that the next table over was so loud my wife and I were getting frustrated just...
Read moreThere are hash browns and then there are hash browns. Blue's browns definitely fall into the latter category.
Hash browns are serious business. Too often they're relegated to a plate filling side, as a condiment and topping to mouth carrier. Not so here.
I came to Blue's hopeful for a tasty brunch after Mass. You know, I like to find places to share with my family. But while I waited for a seat with my dad, I had a chance to look through the menu - 45 minutes to get familiar. I immediately noticed that there were 8 regular menu variants of hashbrowns and 1 serious daily hash browns special. That's a great start.
It was difficult to choose, those 'regular' variants were very appealing, but as this this was my first time, I opted for the eclectic daily special 'Great steel head browns'. Trout, arugula, baby arugula, red onions, sliced cucumber, and fried capers on top of the most perfectly browned in CLARIFIED BUTTER hand cut potatoes? 🤤Yes, please!
It did not disappoint. Even the plain browns on my plate as a side to the little crabby omelette were a stand out compared to other browns experience. The large shape-holding square of potatoes was perfectly browned on both sides, with tender hash between. Ketchup, cheese, hot sauce, etc... Need not apply.
This was just the hash browns folks... This much care and attention went into the browns.
The little crabby omelette, the Hail Mary 🙏 deviled eggs, and the monkey bread were all amazing. There was no disappointment.
Evan, our waiter, was perfectly attentive - maybe he's a natural, maybe he's been doing this awhile, dunno - just know he was on point for us.
Atmosphere was simple, belying the brunch cuisine.
I did not try any of the drinks (there were LOTS of delicious looking options). But I...
