I’m a connoisseur when it comes to Mexican food, so I had very high hopes when I stumbled upon Guelaguetzza’s Taqueria on the corner of Howard and Whitnall. Very little English spoken, boxing on the TV, and no menu save for a poster on the wall with prices on post it notes. For those unfamiliar, this usually means you’re about to have some of the best Mexican food you’ve ever tasted.
I ordered a chimichanga (ground beef), papas des rellenas, 3 tacos de bistek, and two jarritos. Total came to 35 dollars which is good for the amount of food. One guy working in there and he managed to get the order out in 15 minutes. He took the time to explain where in the bag each order was and told me about the two kinds of salsa. Off to a great start.
We opened the containers and the aroma of traditional Oaxacan food greeted us warmly. The utensils and salsa were in a separate bag to keep them cool (professional move here-you others should take note). Their tomatillo sauce is made with I think nopales-wonderful. Mild yet flavorful with a nice salty punch. Bright and refreshing on the food. The red sauce is hearty and delicious. Immediate sweet heat from the chiles married to pineapples. Adds a depth that was complex and still paired with all 3 entrees.
The chimichanga was smothered in a queso made from chihuahua cheese. The beef was spiced very well and drew the attention from the cheese. Fresh lettuce and tomatoes on the side played nicely with the dish overall and couldn’t stand a chance of overpowering the expertly seasoned chimichanga.
The potatoes and meat medley were top notch. A full baked potato topped with seasoned meat and veggies in a nice thick layer that had more queso blanco throughout. Superb.
The tacos were traditional in the best way possible. Well seasoned steak, fresh cilantro, raw diced onions, and cooked onion slices. These were beyond great with the red sauce.
I give top marks to Guelaguetzza’s for this meal. They were fast, fresh, and flavorful. I want to go back as often as...
Read moreThey really do serve a bunch of different types of things to keep you from getting the same thing every time you get an order from them. And I think that’s great that they have a menu which offers really interesting Mexican foods to try out. But of course their mainly known for having some really great tacos from their truck and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us at their new stationary location, once it is open...

Update 9/30/25: Hours on Google are not accurate anymore. I've tried to get food from here twice recently, and they were closed. Despite light show outside, it was dark inside. 6:30pm :( I won't be able to plan to get dinner there if they're not reliable...
