I've been to Wolfie's more than a few times. I will say the food while generally good, has had a couple misses. Some dishes though are particularly good and warrant special mention - the original(non vegan) biscuits and gravy, the breakfast poutine (queso makes everything great), the "little phatty". They are delicious plates and I'd recommend them.
I think however the prices are just a little too high for what it is. $5 for an avocado feels silly. You'll average above $20 per person here, and that's excluding drinks which seems to be something they pride themselves on and you should really consider adding. It's difficult to accept though when you can find many similar quality plates and experiences at other restaurants in the city for less. That said the portion size here is good so maybe the price will not bother you as much.
The biggest issue I have with Wolfie's is how difficult it is to actually eat here, particularly in winter when they don't have outdoor seating service. Because it's so small and has become so popular, if you plan to come at a busier time (I.e. not right when they open or right before they close) you'll be expected to wait 45/60 minutes at a minimum. There were actually several times where the quoted time was well over an hour and one time where I was told we couldn't be seated at all that day (it was around 1 pm and they close at 3).
If you choose to wait it out there is a women's oriented boutique/shop next door (Orange & Blue) that you could kill a little time at but you can only look at candles and jewelry for so long. There are also some outdoor propane heaters but otherwise there is pretty much nowhere inside the restaurant itself to wait. Your last choice is of course your car...which may have you considering leaving altogether.
I do not know what the solution is but I think some things that would make the wait more bearable in the winter: Open up the offerings at Orange & Blue to be a bit less gender specific Allow drinks to be ordered prior to sitting down. (Maybe this is possible? It wasn't offered at least) Consider closing the gift shop seasonally and put seating there.
The service has always been fine but otherwise unremarkable. Some of the inconsistencies: waiting 10 mins after sitting down to have our server come over as well as the wrong plates being served to the table.
All of that said, I want to be clear and say that Wolfie's is a solid brunch choice. Is it the absolute best of Milwaukee or should it be your first choice? Honestly try it and make that decision yourself. You may have a totally different experience than I have. As for me, despite the hiccups, I will still likely find myself waiting...
Read moreThis is a unique breakfast place full of hard-working pierced and tattooed counterculture folks all trying to serve up a unique breakfast experience. If you don't see time as a linear process, and three hours to eat breakfast is what you are looking for, this may be an ok place for you. It all kind of works, and kind of doesn't. The folks here are jammed into a tight small space with poor outside signage, and they do try and make everyone happy. The manager and servers are fine helpful people and they really hustle. The menu is unique and different. Some of it works, some of it really doesn't. The soy sauce infused spam omelette is good, the eggs benedict with the pulled pork is awful. The purple oatmeal with the toasted crunch squares is a delight, (though it might be too sweet for some of you sugar Nazi's), and the small round potatoes with skins on, are not - they sorely need some decent shredded hash browns. Overloaded breakfast places sometimes turn up the temps on everything to get the food out faster, and it shows here. In general, everything seemed overcooked. Just about everything was overcooked too long or at too high a temp and was too dark in color - the english muffins, the potatoes and other dishes were all on the edge of looking burnt. The wait is LONG. Like, really long. We arrived at 11:40 am on a Saturday morning, and our food arrived at our table at 1:45 pm in the afternoon. The place was masterful though in trying to accommodate the wait. There are special tables you can sit at outside that are just for people who are waiting for tables (yes, you read that right), and while you are sitting there, you can place drink orders for very tasty drinks to get a buzz on while you're waiting an hour or two for your table. The drinks were well made and thoughtful, and they do a killer bloody mary. All in all they do try hard, but they need a bigger kitchen here with more cooks. The footprint of this place of what used to clearly be a corner bar or drug store, isn't suitable to turn tables quickly for a breakfast place, and the weekend surge breakfast crowd of Brewers Hill hipsters just simply hang out there too long and crush the place. Be responsible though people and don't show up on super busy surge weekends with 8,12 or 16 people in your group and destroy the entire...
Read moreUncle Wolfie's probably ranks within my top 3 on the brunch list in my head if based purely on food quality, it's that good. The first time I came here was a year ago and wow the menu has changed quite a bit already from offered dishes and the prices.
Came with my friend on a Saturday around noon ready to have a long wait. We were given 45 minutes and were seated in about 1.5 hours. Thankfully, the weather's nice now and the outdoor waiting/seating area have QR codes where you can order coffee and/or cocktails while you wait. Would come with someone you can talk to for a good few hours! There is a small boutique in the back as well if you want to take a quick look around!
The interior is small with ~10-12 small tables and bar seating in the middle (not open seating). Now that the weather's better, half the outdoor tables are also for seated dining. My friend and I decided to share a Latke Waffle Chopped Cheese and the Wolfundido. Other things we were considering were the Poutine or the McJohnny, which I think is a new addition to their menu. Portion wise is on the bigger side, if we weren't so hungry I think we would've had leftovers to take home.
Latke Waffle Chopped Cheese: kind of a potato waffle sandwich that we had to eat with fork/knives because it was a bit messy. The chilis in it does give it a bit of a kick, not sure if those who can't handle spicy would be able to handle it. Comes with fries which were fine, nothing special. Wolfundido: I absolutely love this dish, it's like a healthy skillet that definitely probably isn't healthy but was very delicious with its bell peppers, tomatoes?, and sweet potatoes. The sauce they smothered it in was so good. I would definitely order this one again.
Overall I think it's worth the wait, especially if you have a drink outside. It is a bit pricey in comparison to some other brunch places I've been to but the quality is worth it. Would only come if I had basically an entire morning free to...
