Great Bon mi. Nuff said
UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that I need to be a bit more descriptive in my adoration for Lu's. Aaight, here it goes!
This is my favorite Bahn Mi in the Twin Cities. The bread has excellent chew. The sandwich has the perfext amount of pickled vegetables and spread of pate. The meats are beyond words of amazing.
The meats (and non-meats). I have tried all of them, and would suggest going with the grilled pork or the special ham selections each and every time. The grilled pork is juicy; that grilled pork is savory; that grilled pork is chewy and succulent, great hot or cold, satisfying and comforting--CAN SOMEONE ORDER A LARGE GRILLED PORK FOR ME RIGHT THIS INSTANT!!! Okay, maintaining composure.... The special ham is more of a traditional style of the sandwich (so I have been informed), and feels more like a deli sandwich in its composition. I recommend it and the--ahem, GRILLED PORK-- as it brings albeit different but still excellent flavor combo.
The egg rolls and buns are solid. The bubble tea should be purchased every three visits or so (trying to help you save some money now), but the Bahn Mi is where it's at!
Lu's Northeast-side shop was on Man vs Food last year, and they showed the behomoth sandwich I crave: 2.5 feet long, approx 4lbs... GRRRRRIIIILLLLLLEDDD PPPPPORRRRRRKKK!!!! They are in the process of bring it to the south-side location.
The south-side location has grown over the years. Small parking lot out back, sure, but they redesigned the front counter into an assembly line system (like a Subway or Jimmie Johns), making them faster and more efficient. My suggestion would be to toast the bread for added crunch, but otherwise this sandwich and its assembly is near perfection! Staff is always friendly and cheerful, even during rushes. Heck, the last two years, they seem to always be in a rush and wave of orders, yet they handle it well and put out outstanding customer service.
Gorge yourself on a large Bahn Mi sandwich. No regerts....
Read moreIt was NOT an authentic Bahn mi!! Flavorless and bland, dialed down obviously to serve a western palate. There was nothing authentic about the Bahn mi. And forget authentic Bahn mi, it wasn’t even a decent sandwich. We got their chicken Bahn mi and had them make it how they make it. No crunch on the bread. Their bread just sits there in the warmer and probably was not fresh. I cannot believe they do not toast their Bahn mi. That too for a shop that does only Bahn mi. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to get the one thing you sell right. Even the carrots didn’t have a crunch, not sure how they managed that. was most certainly not fresh. They were probably cut many days ago and just sit there in the container. It sure was just precut carrots from a bag from the store. The chicken was chewy. They pre make everything and it sits in warming trays and is not fresh. We also got their egg rolls and just the first bite dripped so much oil that I could have fried another egg roll in it. Just made me want to throw up! I cannot believe I spent money here. Definitely will not be back ever!! They also do not have any condiments at their tables. No soy sauce or hoisin, not even salt and pepper.
The shop itself was clean. Clean tables and counters. The staff was very nice and courteous. It was nice and warm inside. The food however was a completely different story. For the love god please stop ruining the good name...
Read more4/5 excellent place for traditional Vietnamese sandwiches and noodle/ rice (Buon Cha) bowls! No frills!
Today's service was excellent despite the large order they were preparing also. The front entrance was smashed and broken (looks like damage to property by someone making a bad decision) so it's boarded.
Cold cut (small) 4/5:Very savory and well seasoned pate and mayo! Veggie & herb stuffing was generous. The whole sandwich was delightful. Would have loved a drizzle of soy sauce or house meat sauce which is a typical ingredient. I just added a drizzle of the soy fish sauce and it was great (doesn't need it but I prefer it)
Mock Duck Noodle Bowl 4/5: Noodles on the lighter proportion, spring lettuce mix (instead of typical romaine/ iceberg/perilla/mint), pickled daikon & carrots, cucumbers, choice of veggies or pork eggroll, and choice of tomatoes (which is a plus). The mock duck is very tender and seasoned well-I recommend this!
*Vietnamese fish sauce dressing: Umami but light, very nice. Not too sweet. *Peanut sauce: Light and nutty; not thick nor too sweet. *Soy fish sauce: Lightly sharp and lightly salty. Actually perfectly made for dipping, dressings, and marinades!
**Got all the to try and they were all very good. I mixed the entire Vietnamese fish sauce dressing with a spoon on the soy and peanut sauce and it gave the noodle bowl a great flavor. Fifty cents...
