WARNING: If you want anything special or seasonal, you need to pre-order. None of the customer service staff will tell you this is even an option, it's not posted anywhere on their social media or their website as of Dec 26, 2020, but if you want something special or limited, please contact in advance.
I am completely appalled at how their customer service dropped the ball. I love this cafe, as it's food is incredibly high quality, and the diversity of choices is also refreshing, but I've been completely kicked in the teeth this last week. I came in on December 16 to see if they were doing anything special for Christmas. On display was a box of Panettone, so I inquired if they were making any. The young woman at the counter said no, that was only for display purposes, however, they would be making Stollen for Christmas Week. I was happy to hear this as I really wanted to try a professionally made Stollen, so bought a croissant and left. Next Monday, Dec. 21, I came in, and waited in line a short while. They were quite busy, and at one point, the woman who I assumed was the baker from her attire came to the front to help customers as well. Sadly, I did not get her name. I inquired if there was any Stollen today, and was told no, in fact, she stated it was only being made for Christmas Eve. Disappointed at the miscommunication, but still looking forward to dessert and having had such great experiences with the cafe before, I let it slide, and went home for the day. Come today, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve, I came in to try and order some Stollen as I was instructed to. I didn't see any on display, and asked the young woman at the counter, who stated that they were pre-order only.
Here I was, having come to this cafe not once, but three separate times to see if they had anything special, and was now being told at the final time that I was at fault for not pre-ordering. I asked when I was supposed to pre-order, and they said last week. I stated I had come in last week (though admittedly I did not recall which day specifically at the time) and was told at that time to specifically come in this week, and then today, to get the dessert. They said that if I came in on Friday or Thursday, they weren't accepting pre-orders, and that the woman who helped me Monday probably just assumed I had already pre-ordered. Having checked my transactions, I came in on December 16, so 8 days before Christmas Eve, and was not even informed, let alone offered the chance to pre-order Stollen. The only reason I am not putting down a lower star is because, their food is quite good and the service fast. However, I feel insulted, and will not be coming back because if a happy, compliant and paying customer won't even get so much as the chance to make a purchase, obviously they don't want my business.
Update: Having finally gotten in contact with the owner, I was once again told it was my fault for not pre-ordering, this time however, she stated that pre-ordering needed to be done three weeks in advance, as opposed to the week in advance I was told on Dec. 24, as the process is long and difficult for the pastry making. I understand these things take time. The issue has never been that these things take time and are difficult. My issue has continually been that no one bothered to mention I need to pre-order in order to get specials or seasonal items. Maybe I am just stupid for not intuitively understanding that this was an option, but it was never relayed to me. I checked their website to see if this was mentioned anywhere, it was not. I even checked their Facebook to see if it was mentioned there, it was not. There was no way of me knowing at any time before this that I had the option to pre-order, let alone that I was supposed to. She did apologize however, and did offer me a free item as compensation. Again, the food is wonderful, the service is usually excellent, I will be raising my rating as at least she's willing to take responsibility and offer. Just be aware, no one will tell you you're supposed to pre-order...
Read moreIn Minot to visit relatives and excited to have the opportunity to shop a locally owned business! I went twice, once on my own and then with my husband a few days later. We had the dark roast coffee and both times it was just "OK"... second time it was just mildly sour. I had a couple of questions when I went in on my own and my husband did as well when we went together the 2nd time. Business was steady but it was not crazy. The "boss" (owner?) talked to me the first time when one of the pleasant young women didn't know the answer to my question and I felt she was a little impatient, and borderline rude/ condescending. The second visit the boss was at the counter helping get the morning started and she asked what we wanted... she had the same inpatient, somewhat rude attitude toward my husband's question as well. The pastries we chose (chocolate and ham & cheese croissant) were very good but not stellar. The chocolate itself was just a run of the mill somewhat dark and there was definitely not the right amount in the pastry. All the chocolate croissants I've eaten (anywhere in the US and in Europe) have had a consistent layer of chocolate in the center, this one definitely had a gap through the very center and chocolate only around the edges of the center space. My husband said his ham & cheese was "pretty good". BOTH croissants were light and flaky, yummy buttery taste. Honestly, if the boss had been as friendly as her staff I probably wouldn't have thought much of this minor issue with the chocolate croissant but since she seemed to be condescending I think her pastries should have been amazing as I'll happily allow for some artistic arrogance but they were not perfection. I thought prices were really very good with nice diverse selection of food and drink. I don't know your name but a little smile and good, patient customer service will go a long way! Potential to be a fantastic little café and Minot really needs more locally owned and run businesses like this! Hope to be back next year...
Read moreThe building is nothing to write home about on the outside. Inside is wonderful. The music is lovely, the lighting is great, the windows are great to eat in front of. Perfect in terms of aesthetics.
The food is not only good, it's good for the price. Most places in North Dakota are terrified to put any kind of flavor in their food. You may be skeptical of some of the strange crepes. Try them. I was skeptical too. You'll know the one I'm talking about. It was great.
Speaking of the price, you can expect to spend about 12 dollars per person. Again, the amount of food for the price is fairly good.
About amenities. The seating is adequate for small groups. You're going to need to break up into smaller groups if you bring more than about 4 people. They DO have a drive thru.
The place is not really handicap friendly. The sidewalk is difficult to access and does not have a ramp. At the end of the sidewalk, the concrete rises above it enough to allow a wheelchair access, but they put large potted plants in the path. Also, the doors are not machine operable, so someone may need to open the door for you if you're unable to do so.
They have one booster seat for children. If anyone in the place has a child, it will be fairly difficult with kids. Wouldn't recommend it. The food is also not ESPECIALLY geared toward children, but it's a coffee and sandwich shop, so it's to be expected.
In summary, it's a great, cozy place that would be OUTSTANDING for a date. You're going to spend about 12 dollars per person and be full when you leave. For the handicapped, plan according to the above. For those with kids, I wouldn't recommend it unless you wish to use the drive thru or a to go order.
Highly recommended. It's only losing one star due to what I feel is a small amount of carelessness, blocking the path for those with a handicap. This should be one of your...
