"The Allegheny County Health Department shut down a mobile food truck in Monaca and posted a consumer alert at Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Wilkins for multiple food safety violations.

Steve and Benny’s Chicken Shack at 1032 Pennsylvania Ave. in Monaca was closed for operating without a health permit, lack of a water supply, and lack of a probe thermometer to monitor food temperatures.

The food truck must remain closed until the problems are fixed.

The operator of the business could not be reached for comment."

I really wanted this place to be great but it was underwhelming. The pros: they were very nice taking my phone order, they stayed open for me to pick up my order, and the fries were not bad... nothing remarkable but fine. The cons: though the chicken was large is was very dark and very dry. Half of my piece was inedible (see photo). It was $64 to feed 4 people. I'm willing to pay boutique prices if it's amazing but I was not impressed. The patron side of the place was really dirty... the one working bathroom was really bad... like bad bad... no soap a damp roll of paper towels sitting on the toilet, and I'm not even going talk about the toilet or floors. There was a filthy rag laying on the counter where you receive your order and all the points of contact were discolored with dirt. I honestly would have walked out if I had not ordered in advance. The cook was wearing gloves but based on the front of house...

Steve and Bennys has done countless events I have participated in. When I was getting chemo at West Penn, they catered lunch for the entire floor and everyone raved about it. They have done two golf outings for me as well and I’m still getting texts for their information because it was outstanding. They opened a South Hills location so I had to try it also (love to Recon for awesome beer always!). These guys are regulars on the scene and for good reason. Without a doubt they’re my first call and my first choice for a referral. They will customize the menu and options to your event, Chef Ben is a true hidden gem.
