My wife and I visited Guru's for dinner on 7-22-15. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience, and would surly visit again if we didn't live in Texas. I will share our experience from that evening in the context of atmosphere, service, and food quality.
Atmosphere: Like many of the older buildings in downtown Montrose, Guru's dining room suffers from a damp, musty smell. It is not overwhelming, but is very noticeable, especially when you first enter the restaurant. The decor is true to Guru's Indian/Nepalese theme, and is appealing in that it is not loud and overdone. We did notice that our tablecloth was dirty, and it seemed that the entire dining room could do with a refresh. Despite wishing that the restaurant was a little cleaner, it did not detract from our dining experience.
Service: We were very satisfied with our service. The wait staff was kind, thoroughly answered our questions, and kept our glasses full. I can't think of a single criticism of the service we received.
Food: We ordered the following items; Guru's Sample Platter, lamb curry, and saag paner. The portions for everything we ordered were ample without being over-large. We left satisfied and FULL.
The sample platter consists of various pakodas, which is a battered and deep-fried food, a samosa and naan. The crust on the pakoda was very fine, which resulted in a texture that was both perfectly crispy and delicate at the same time. The samosa was filled with bold flavors and a pleasant texture that is similar to a baked yam. The naan was simply delicious with the provided yogurt sauce. There was not a single item on the sample platter that we didn't love, which is saying something if you read my other restaurant reviews.
Lamb curry is an Indian staple, and Guru's version did not disappoint. Bursting with exotic spices and flavors, this curry is as good as I have had at any restaurant. The accompanying rice was a good starchy compliment to the spicy curry sauce, and provided a wonderful flavor profile when mixed and eaten on top of naan.
My wife ordered the saag paner at the suggestion of the waitress. We had never ordered this dish before at any other restaurant, and were excited at the prospect of trying something new. Saag paner is a cheese dish mixed with spinach, and Guru's offering was perfectly creamy and savory. Combined with naan it was simply delightful.
In summation, we absolutely loved the food, appreciated the service, and felt that the dining room should be remodeled and refreshed. It was a great culinary adventure that was absolutely...
Read moreThis place is the best place ever if you want something with a ton of flavor, but yet the perfect amount! I ordered here the first time, because it was the only place that delivered other than Pizza Hut or Domino's. I wasn't sure what to get so I asked for some suggestions. I got the tandoori chicken, the chicken tikka masala, and naan bread. I didn't expect for it to be amazing, but when I bit into my first bite, I couldn't stop eating it. There were four different sauces that came with the naan bread, and I can't explain what all of them are but I decided to try them all and to this day I still can't decide which one is my favorite. I have ordered here more times than I can count now, and it has become my favorite restaurant. I had never tried Indian food before, and I always thought of curry dishes as being something too spicy, but now, I'm not afraid to try anything at this place, because everything is great and amazing. The most amazing part, is that they don't even charge delivery fee! The prices for each dish range from around$9 to $15. Is very inexpensive for the amount of food you receive. I can feed my family of four with two dishes and a couple orders of naan bread. Of course I always order extra so that I have leftovers for the next day's lunch. There are also many choices of naan bread, but I think the garlic is my favorite and the cheesy one is the kids favorite. My kids are somewhat picky eaters, and even they liked all four sauces and all of the food except for the onions lol. If you have never tried Indian food, I recommend trying this place. And even if you have tried Indian food, I still recommend this place! I don't know if they have dessert here because I am so pleased with all the regular food, that I don't...
Read morePretty decent experience overall for two first-time visitors, with some standout food and surprisingly attractive bathrooms.
My friend and I went here for lunch, and shared samosas, lamb biryani, and lamb masala, plus garlic naan, naturally. Total came to $50 (neither of us had a drink), and had enough leftovers for another meal.
Food: 8/10. Naan was 10/10, perfection-- fluffy interior and crisp bottom, liberally covered with garlic and cilantro. Some naans out here get a bit bready, but Guru's was excellent. The lamb masala sauce was good, and the rice was also perfect. It's clear they used a decent quality grain and washed well, there was no stodginess to the rice and it was very fluffy. Samosas were good as well, could have been a bit more heavily spiced. Portions were good, we were both starving and still had half a naan, 20% of the biryani, and a little curry left over. The only letdown was the lamb, it was a bit dry in the biryani (as if it were overcooked, cooked just past the falling apart stage).
Bathroom: 9/10. Surprisingly beautiful, actually. Nice little marble effect, automated paper towel dispenser. Had to subtract one for a bit of rust staining in one of the toilets and having the doors awkwardly close to the toilet itself-- you have to step slightly out of the way to open the doors, as they only open inward. I struggle to imagine someone using a wheelchair being able to manage it easily. No changing station, however.
Atmosphere: 10/10. Guru is in a decent location on Main street, but that can make parking a bit of a challenge (as much as it can be, which is still maybe a couple blocks' walk). Interior is clean and nice, although it was a bit dark (then again, it was a cloudy day). Overall, a great...
