The reviews did not even come close to our experience. Super disappointing for such a highly rated and recommended place. Before getting to the bad of our visit I must say the atmosphere is PHENOMENAL. What a cool little cafe environment where it seems like everyone knows everyone. It was all bad from the moment we were seated. The 5 people behind us in the line actually received their meals before our orders were even taken. While waiting for our food we noticed stuck on food debris inside my wife’s water cup which dislodged into the water of course. We did not get offered any refills until the very end and we were there at the end of the rush. Our waitress was more interested in hanging out at the bar and talking to employees / regulars than serving us. The food came and we were finally ready to see what all the reviews rave about. What we got was cold (not room temp even) fries and mushy undercooked French toast. As we were eating we noticed the dust falling from the fake plant right next to our food and the dead fly that was stuck in the dust. To top our visit off, we waited probably 10-15 minutes for the check after finishing eating, even after making eye contact with our waitress multiple times. Finally we get the check, wallet out ready to pay…. She leaves the check and “runs away” to go chill at the bar with her coworkers again…. Another 5-10ish minutes goes by and another waitress notices us and finally cashes us out. I want to end this review on a high note that maybe it was an off day for our waitress and the cook, everyone was SO NICE that I almost didn’t leave this review, but after spending $40 on breakfast for two I figured I had to...
Read moreAfter a few years of fits and starts of various eateries at this 300 E Main Street location, Ray's Corner Cafe has settled in as an excellent edition to Montrose's restaurants. Winter hours were a bit scaled back with dinner served only a few nights a week, but with summer upon us, they're open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day but Sunday.
The food and service are excellent. It's a small menu that changes every now and then, but you will certainly find something to make your tummy happy.
They might have the best fish and chips in town. Fish is well battered, flaky, and tasty. Chips done right. The short ribs were succulent and adequate, sitting on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes with a side of just enough tasty carrots and asparagus.
Last night, my partner and I split the meat loaf, and Ray came over and visited our table to ask how everything was, I mentioned fine but the the meat loaf was a bit dry, so he brought out some jalapeño gravy which was a perfect addition and took the meal to another level. Make sure you give that gravy a taste.
The restaurant has simple decore and is long and narrow, which makes it a bit noisy when crowded, It could use some sound baffling to break up the room into zones which might quiet it down a bit.
Overall though, Ray's is really good and a great addition to restaurants...
Read moreOvernighting in Montrose en route to Telluride and looking for something "different" from the standard fare found in most towns throughout the Midwest/Western States. Found it at Ray's. Walked in and immediately greeted (humorously) by, turns out the owner, Ray who owns a charming "character" personality mixed with some culinary chops. Lindsey Salad was great way to start the meal with just the right amount of balsamic vinaigrette. Main was a breaded chicken thigh smothered with jalapeno gravy and mashed spuds.. "Toto, I've a feeling were not in Kansas anymore". When asked, he paired it with a perfected matched Rose (served by the glass) that accentuated both the jalapeno sauce and under the radar spices in the breaded chicken thigh. Asparagus/carrots perfectly grilled. Closed with a concoction of whiskey based after dinner drink that paired remarkably well with the apple breaded-pudding ice cream dessert. Other items on the menu including Shrimp and Grits, suggest a Southern influence to his culinary repertoire; have to change my plans on the backslide to sample those and other items in this hidden gem found in...
