For this area, it is very good - and it’s the only sushi option we have. I can’t stop laughing at all the people giving Hiro a bad review because it’s not as good as sushi in California or Washington or Japan - no kidding! That’s like going to Japan and complaining about how bad the Mac-n-cheese is! Snarky foodies and those passing through or new to the area who don’t understand how difficult it is to get things here - you don’t need to compare it to wherever you’re from or whatever you’re “used to” or “familiar with.” Montrose is completely land locked, 1000 miles from any ocean, rural, not on any major freeway, and has little variety as far as international cuisine of any type. There are 40,000 people in the entire county and it’s not really a hot spot for cultural diversity. Maybe it isn’t top notch for L.A., but for this area, it’s nice to have it! Everyone in my family likes going to Hiro, it’s usually our “special occasion” place. They have specialty rolls for holidays that are pretty fun to try. I always get rainbow roll and I haven’t had one I’d consider not good. I have had better sushi in big cities, it’s not the best sushi over ever had, but it’s also good. It is a bit pricy but, again, Montrose is not near a freeway and most of the roads going there are closed or really dangerous in winter (and non-winter) months so imagine what it costs to get sushi supplies. I get the cost here. The owner isn’t the friendliest person, but he is not American and I’m pretty sure it’s a cultural thing. He isn’t rude, he’s just blunt and isn’t going to make small talk with you. The restaurant itself is small with an odd layout and usually cold, that is true. But we don’t mind because we get sushi! That’s a treat! If you’re from out of town, you should know you’re not getting fish that was caught this morning when you’re at 6000 feet elevation surrounded by mountains… so just pass on by and don’t...

We were greeted and seated promptly by the host. The menu selection is nicely varied, enough meal choices while still being well thought out. The table and dishes were spotless. The owner came out to take our order. He was extremely friendly answering our questions and offered suggestions without trying to rush our order. He seems to genuinely love what he does.
For an appetizer we ordered the pan friend gyoza. It was excellent as good as any I had in Japan. For a main course we each ordered the chicken katsu. Delicious! The salad with the house sesame ginger dressing was fresh and tasty. The miso was of good quality and taste. We also ordered sushi rolls. I was delighted to find that despite being in a small Colorado town the sushi was fresh and delecious. They are using good quality tuna and there wasn't a hint of a fishy taste to it. We also shared a small bottle of warmed sake. The sake was only 6 dollars but was smooth and buttery. The small bottle contained enough sake to fill the small sake glasses 6 times. A real bargain for the price and quality.
The staff were excellent. They visited the table enough to take care of what we needed without becoming a nuisance.
This is a gem of a restaurant for a small town like Montrose.
I highly recommend stopping here for dinner whether you are a local or just...
Read moreI heard this place had decent Sushi, Have been wanting to try it. My son and I stopped in today and decided to order a Sushi roll, 2 Ramen bowls and Gyoza with 2 hot teas. When our order was taken I asked if the noodles were fresh and was told yes by the lady who took our order I also asked if there was pork and was told this is not Japan it’s America???🤔. The sushi roll arrived first and it was excellent. I believe it was called the dynamite roll. Then our ramen arrived, folks, it was instant noodles and broth with small chunks of beef added along with some chopped scallions. Horrible!! I was completely disappointed. Usually ramen has thin sliced meat, an egg half and hand made noodles. Well, if you were gonna Americanize Ramen, you hit it spot on rite out of the plastic package. Can’t believe you are charging people $15.00 a bowl for that instant soup. Then our gyoza arrived, $9.00. For 5 small over-fried to petrify-cation. I am gonna say only 2 stars because the sushi roll was good. But the rest was a disgrace to Japanese steak houses. Worst of all, we walked out after paying the ticket for 75.00 for 2...
