Came to this restaurant quite often this year, did not want to write a review to attract the weekend crowds. However, I wish a revew can help with improving its consistency in quality and for me to have another restauratant to visit regularly.
Last visit, we did not go for the usual, dim sum. It was a multiple-dishes dinner. Dish one: Homemade Tofu. Only ten pieces of smaller than 1.5 square inch tofu in a regular size of plate. The plate looked beautiful, carrots, snow peas, Chinese vegetables, and so on. But, tofu is what we craved for but gone after each person picked two pieces. Dish two: Taro with Pork Belly. Wow. Taro was overflowing from the plate; however, it was well steamed and soaked in the pork belly juice. Delicious...I wish I could have been satisfied by Taro, the pork belly was unbelievablly favorless, none were intact, and invisible if you did not turn the plate upside down. I wondered this dish should be named differetnly if the pork quality and quantity cannot be improved. Dish three: Fried Salt Fish and Chicken Rice. Yes, I am so accustomed to authentic Chinese dishes. Horrible experience of this dish last time, hesitated to order but ended up with a good surprise. It still needs more salt fish to get into the embedded distinct favor, but rice was well cooked and seasoned when chicken stripes were cut into random size when you found the second or the third one. Dish four: General Tso Chicken. This is a dish for my dear husband. I did not touch it at all. The breading had an acceptable look, but I wondered they were crispy. No comments on Americanized Chinese dish, never knew what it SHOULD taste like. Soup: Wonton Soup. Wonton was no different from any common Chinese take-out restaurant (not the real Wonton Soup), but the soup was like the "wash pot water", a native Chinese describe anything gets watered down.
I found hard to accept the food quality is in a hit or miss manner even when it is busy on weekends if you walk in the wrong time. In many previous visits solely for dim sum, consistency was missing. Over or under cooking, re-heaingt/steaming/frying dishes are challenging to tell by foreign taste bud, but it is a shame to claim authenicity if I could even ignore cutting corners to sell more dishes. Two starts given to...
Read moreUp until a few months ago we always enjoyed dining at Oriental Grill. One of the better local places offering a mix of traditional and American Chinese options, as well as sushi. The food is always excellent however there has been a steep decline in their level of service. One issue might be that they appear understaffed and to be honest, staffed by a couple individuals who really don't care one bit about servicing customers. I will always forgive staff who are struggling to keep their level of service up when it's busy but at least are putting in the effort. What I can't forgive is when they aren't even trying to provide the most basic levels of service, especially when the restaurant isn't even half full. Failure to check on drinks, bring out water, extra plates, silverware, to-go boxes and just in general check in on the table every so often...all lacking at Oriental Grill. You have to ask for assistance constantly. One waiter in particular makes you feel as though you are bothering him when you signal a need for assistance. Plus...since when do you have to ask for fried noodles and sauce? Tea? Which by the way you are now charged for. Or how about during our two most recent visits being told that you can't sub shrimp for chicken/beef/pork in the broccoli combo. What? And please, don't give a condescending lecture to a customer about what chicken teriyaki is, when the plain chicken strip that was delivered, clearly had no teriyaki sauce on it. Again...food is excellent like other reviewers back up. I really hope they address their service...
Read moreWe went to this restaurant for Easter as the owner and his brother are friends of my father. It was distasteful and truly I was disgusted. We were a party of 8 and we had waited 30 minutes to get a table. Then were seated and noone gives us menus or addresses us. 45 minutes later we had to steal menus from an empty table. There were all these beautiful Asian dishes being carried out in steamer baskets and on plates to tables full of Asian families. We finally had to stop the waiter and ask if we could at least get drinks and we put in orders for appetizers. What we got is plates of sushi with no chop sticks no sauces and 3 plates of hard crab rangoon. Then our entres came out as cold limp take out. After I had just seen all these beautiful dishes, our food as white Americans was standard, lunch take out. Totally unacceptable. So we never saw our waiter again, no dishes were cleared,we were not attended to,no desert for this family outing and 2 hours later,we had to ask the manager for the bill and take out containers for our dry, cold food. The waiter then had the nerve to come out of the building, chase us to our car and ask where his tip was. My response was, no service, no tip. I was just disgusted with the whole experience. And it's sad, because the owner and his family are good people, unfortunately their staff dropped the ball in how they treated us. You should treat every customer with respect, whether they are of your race or not. Because you never know who's associates they are. We would Never recommend this...
