The food was acceptable, if nothing special.
But we had the absolute worst service I think I've experienced at a restaurant. And I don't say that lightly.
This was on the evening of Friday July 19th 2019. We started by calling the day before to ask to make sure we had a table for our party (small birthday gathering, I think we ended up having 9 people, with a couple of kids/high chairs). They said okay no problem.
The next day we called back just to make absolutely sure, and they said they don't do reservations. We almost re-routed, but decided to stick the plan instead. So we show up, wait more than an hour for our table with what seemed like no air conditioning on one of the hottest days of the year so far. Okay, it's summer time, it's our friend's birthday, and the weekend is starting. Not great, but workable. Fine.
Then after waiting another 20+ minutes for our drinks to come out (remember the aforementioned heat), and another 15 or so for apps, it ended up being - I don't know, I lost count, 45 minutes after we ordered before food showed up? So now we're going on 2 hours of being there from the time of showing up to getting food.
Our server very rarely ever came to our table. In what should have been mid-meal, I asked for a refill on my tea. I never got one, by the time we left almost an hour later. Our table wasn't rude, or disruptive, or anything out of the ordinary. Just some people with day jobs and kids getting together for a friend's birthday. But we were convinced at some point in the night that our server just retired or hit the lotto and ran off to Fiji. Who knows.
To make it worse, when our one friend who organized the get together went back to get her husband's phone, she was getting a bit angry (rightfully so at this point, making kind of a dud of a birthday get together), and the server straight up told her she didn't care because she automatically got gratuity included since it was a party.
So my first experience at Cinco De Mayo on Franklin Rd will be my absolute last.
Please look through my review history, I rarely give negative reviews. You really have to screw up pretty hard for me to come down, especially at a restaurant as I've worked food service before and totally understand that side of things. But this was just poor environment (hardly functioning AC with no ceiling fans even to move air around) and absolute bottom-tier service.
I wouldn't touch this place with a...
Read moreThe restaurant itself reminded me of the real Mexican restaurants in Mexico and Texas. The food was good but not anywhere near the spicy levels that I am used to. I think it has been modified for the American audience. It was authentic, but not seasoned to my recollection. The tamale was good, although the masa was a little more firm than I would have liked. The meat was very tender. The taco was delicious, but I think it sat on the plate too long, because one side was a little soft making it a little hard to eat. The fajitas and the grilled vegetable plate with chicken was excellent. The burrito tasted good, but would have tasted better with a spicier sauce. I enjoyed the enchilada and the chile relleno. I am used to the chile being filled with cheese, but this one was filled with meat. Not sure if that is normal here or if was done because I said all beef for my dishes. All in all, good food. The srvice was great, and our server seemed to know some of the other guests as they were engaged in conversation. If you enjoy food that is not spicy and look for the authentic Mexican restaurant experience, I recommend this restaurant. Good...
Read moreMy wife and I have been going to this restaurant for years, and it was always our favorite Mexican restaurant. The last few times we have been, the level of service has been quickly declining. It takes forever for a waiter to take our order or to get refills on drinks, orders are messed up, or the waiter tells me that the meal I have ordered dozens of times with both chicken and steak is not something that can be ordered... To top it all off, we were really craving Mexican food tonight so we called multiple times over the span of about 30 minutes. We called about 15 times total with no answer. My wife drove to the restaurant to place an order, and when she asked why calls weren’t going through (we thought maybe the phone was down), the hostess was rude to her and said that they were too busy to answer the phone and had no plans to answer the phone tonight. My wife and I will not be dining here again, so they have lost at least one long-time customer because of their lack of proper management and service. The service has been absolutely unacceptable lately, and it’s a shame because the food was always great (when it came...
