Being in early pregnancy, my husband and I were looking forward to dining at Murray Jasmine’s last night after we got the okay from my doctor that sushi is perfectly fine as long as it is fully cooked. This was our first time going for sushi here since expecting.
Before ordering, just to be 100% safe, I checked with our waiter Curtis B. to get verbal confirmation that anything that doesn’t have the raw fish symbol next to it is fully cooked. He told me yes and so I went on to order the $15 Eastern Peak roll that was not marked as raw.
When this roll arrived it was obvious that the “seared” salmon on top was still very raw. The equivalent of rare steak- it might have been seared- but not to the level of safety for a pregnant woman. I wish I had taken a picture to post with this to show what I mean, but didn’t think about it until I decided to write this review. Anyway, I kindly brought up my concerns to my waiter, letting him know I am only concerned because I am pregnant and so he said he would check with the sushi chef. Looking back, I believe my kindness was what may have caused us not to get the refund/change in order we deserved. But anyway, when our waiter came back, he let me know that the salmon is “seared”, but instructed me not to eat the fish eggs on top.
Even after telling me not to eat part of the roll I ordered, he still never offered to get me a new roll, take this off the bill, anything. Which is disappointing, especially considering it was a $15 roll and the fact he gave me a false impression of safety before ordering. It would not have been difficult for our waiter to give us a heads up when ordering that the roll is not completely raw, but would have only a light sear on the salmon and that the eggs on top or whatever are not safe for women who are pregnant. This seemed like an obvious thing to do after I had just asked about if all unmarked sushi is fully cooked. If I got a heads up I would have just saved my $15 I threw away on this roll and ordered something different and this would have been no big deal.
In hindsight, I should have just stuck with a California roll or something I knew would be safe, but I had a false sense of safety with the menu marking items raw as raw and with our waiter lying about the safety of food when ordering.
I guess it was easier for our waiter to lie and say yes all unmarked items are fully cooked than the truth that all unmarked items are not completely raw, but there’s still a few rolls that should be avoided as they are not fully cooked and unsafe for a pregnant woman.
Our waiter probably realized too that my roll I ordered was one of the more expensive rolls and thought he’d get a better tip because of that so of course he wasn’t going to suggest a California roll or something like that of half the cost instead.
Although I didn’t touch my Eastern Peak roll, my husband did eat it after seeing this was something we’d be paying for no matter what. In his own words he said, “any sushi is good if you drown it in enough soy sauce” haha. After this experience it will definitely take a lot for us to come back to Murray Jasmine, which we hate because we’ve dined here and the Paducah location dozens of times and never had an issue before last night.
If you’re pregnant or have any sort of dietary restrictions, I would advise you to steer clear of this location too due to the way everything was handled. The chefs just cooked what was on the ticket, but our waiter completely missed the mark. An idea to prevent this in the future might be coding the menu further, keeping the sashimi/completely raw sushi notated as it is, but also adding another notation for rolls that are undercooked or use ingredients not safe for pregnant women. Although this shouldn’t be necessary as it is should be the responsiblity on the waiter to be knowledgeable on the food being served when asked, but unfortunately that didn’t happen with Curtis B. as our receipt says. Poor service is one thing, but poor service by putting the health of customers at risk is a whole...
Read moreI really wanted to like this place- really I did- my husband and I had heard rave reviews, we were told it was the best and most elegant place in Murray.
Sadly it wasn't great- at all. We ordered the appetizer platter, some Thai (drunken noodles), and some sushi: so that we could get a little taste of all they had to offer. The food wasn't bad, the sushi was just kind of average, the rest a little less than average. We were given teaspoons with our soup- because even though there were only 4 other customers in the restaurant- they were out of soup spoons. I'm not sure why it took our waitress nearly 10 minutes to get 2 glasses of water- or why it took almost an hour to serve what was ordered off of the lunch menu, but after being told not to worry that there was 'nothing weird' when I asked what was kind of fish was on the sushi sashimi lunch (but she didn't know what it was) - and that she didn't know what a few other things on the menu even were- I stopped asking questions. There was a lot of stuff that was obviously covered up on the menu- and they no longer have some of the other things- I guess they ran out of white out before they got to everything. Here is where my disappointment really took over and started to ruin any hope I had left of this being the amazing restaurant I was expecting... If you run a business that is mostly based on feeding people raw fish- you should probably try to avoid looking like you cut a lot of corners- I'm willing to bet that a new menu from vista print would have been cheaper than buying all that white out and paying someone to go over every menu. I went into this restaurant fully expecting to love it, I was very...
Read moreLet me start by saying I am no food connoisseur, it doesn’t take much to make me happy. This used to be a good place to expect good food from, now it is only a waste of money. We ordered take-out on a Saturday night, two steak dinners and one soy noodle dish. What a let down. The food was such poor quality, and what we did get was either wrong, missing or included ingredients that weren’t listed, which is precarious for people with food allergies. The steaks were the cheapest, toughest, cuts of meat we’ve ever had. Perhaps they had been frozen for quite awhile before cooking. I am no steak expert but if I pay almost $30 for a dish I expect to the food to be edible. Mine was so tough I threw it out half way through. It didn’t come with the teriyaki sauce it was advertised with, I ordered and paid extra for fried rice and was given white rice. I was also missing the miso soup. We also ordered the soy-noodle dish- which was ordered specifically because on Jasmine’s website it did not include bell peppers. Well, when we opened the container the dish was full of bell peppers. Perhaps they gave us the wrong noodle dish entirely. My partner had a bell pepper allergy so it had to be thrown out. I have eaten there many times in the past and it is a lovely chic restaurant that is great for date nights. Every server I have ever had has always been very attentive and polite, the atmosphere is cool and relaxed. But the food is just not good anymore and after a few other times of ordering out and being let down for some reason or another we’ve had enough. I am more than happy to pay good money for good food in return, but to pay $80 and have to throw half of it...
