I'll give this place 3 stars for the kitchen staff. The food is always of high quality and well prepared. The main dining room is quaint and I love that the owners showcase local artists on the walls.
However, there is a big issue that keeps us from wanting to return; the service. There is one server in particular who is uninterested and inattentive. Our last couple of consecutive trips we've sat in her section and the experience was so poor we don't intend to return. Her initial visit is coffee and a cool hello. Both times she only ever came back to take our order and again to drop the check. Never did she bring our food out, check the quality, refill our coffee, or do anything one would expect from a tiny local eatery.
It's disappointing that one server can cause such an unpleasant experience, because most of the wait staff outside of her are great.
Sometimes the hosts aren't very helpful either. On our last trip we were sat in a strange booth away from the rest of the dining room directly next to the bathrooms in a small hallway. Not only was the seat odd feeling and kind of dark (not at all the experience we wanted from the Lucky Penny's other lively dining room), it smelled of toilets. When we asked to move elsewhere the host asked us to hold on and brought over a woman, who looked to be a manager, to take care of the issue. The manager seemed annoyed that we asked to move and kind of made it feel like a big deal. Honestly, that table should not be in use, but if it's a necessary 2-top at least ask before seating people there.
As we left, the hosts we're bickering about taking our bill (one saying to the other it was her turn, that she's not helpless, and would like if the other girl didn't try to do everything for her). It was unprofessional, but would otherwise have been ignored if the rest of our meal...
Read moreMy wife & I were excited to try this place after reading reviews that said they have Vegan & Gluten Free menus. Our experience was decent, but with some disappointment.
1st, I tried calling ahead to place our order (bc we're 35ish mins away) & no one picked up the phone, seemed like I was hung up on twice. So, we had to drive all the way there to order.
Then, when we arrived, there was no one at the small front counter to greet us or take our order. We had to stand there akwardly looking at the menus at the head of the dining room while we waited for help. This was on a weekday morning they were bustling but not packed.
The Vegan & Gluten Free menus, while appreciated, are separate btw, so if you are BOTH Vegan & GF, you still have to ask questions about the menu items. It would be better if the Vegan menu was marked with GF identifiers to make everything more straight forward. Aside from that, the menus prices had been changed, reflecting prices that were much higher than reflected online.
*I've added photos of the Vegan menu with updated prices.
Finally, a staff member came to greet us. We asked about take out. We had to wait 5 more minutes until another staff member came to take our order with a handheld. We ordered the Vegan Breakfast & Vegan Chilaquiles bc it was the most affordable options, which had a wait time of 20 minutes. The food was good, but pretty basic for the high price. Seems like they are banking on convenience, but this wasn't even a convenient visit for us, considering we didnt dine in & the time we wasted just to place an order. The cafe is cute, but pretty small & the dining room was a lil' tight.
Would love to try more of their menu, but not sure we'll be back considering the ordering inconvenience & lack of...
Read moreThe restaurant was clean and bright. The interior is old fashion, which looks really nice, and the vibe was nice as well. I like the interior and some of the artwork they have. The customer service is definitely outstanding. The staff are extremely friendly, welcoming, and accommodating at the same time. I could really feel their care towards a customer like me. Even if I have not ordered yet, I like the restaurant because of the customer service. They also have a wide menu with a lot of options for both breakfast and lunch. All the food sounds good to me. The prices also seem fair and reasonable. I was alone, and I only ordered their Mexican skillet. The customer service here is really great because they also serve food quickly. I even thought that I would wait longer considering that the restaurant is quite packed. I am just glad that they served my order quickly. The skillet has a nice portion and is definitely reasonable for its price. It looks good, and it tastes even better when I get to taste it. I like it too because it has good flavor and seasoning. There was the perfect amount of chorizo, and I really liked the Mexican skillet overall. The coffee I ordered together with the skillet was also a good one. I really enjoyed dining in this restaurant for the very first time, and I am sure that it will not...
