We're slowly exploring every Ethiopian restaurant in the area. This spot has the best meat curry we've had so far. The meat is not too tough, with medium spiciness, and seasoned perfectly. The vegetable sides are all yummy and flavorful- today she brought delicious lentils, green beans, a cabbage dish?, cooked greens, cheese crumbles, boiled eggs, and centered with the wonderful curry. She'll ask if you eat meat or are vegetarian, then will bring a selection of the dishes she has prepared. This was the 1st place we saw crumbled soft cheese that looks like feta, but is sweeter and milder, and boiled eggs for each person. If you've never had Ethiopian food, you eat it by hand, using pieces of a crepe/pancake form of gluten-free bread, called injera, to scoop up bites of food. The food is served on a platter of the injera bread, and your party all eat off the platter family style. It's different, but our family is loving exploring each restaurant and the nuances of each chef's cooking. This chef is very welcoming and gracious. She handled everything herself, with impeccable hospitality. The prices are reasonable; for 3 people, 3 drinks (the hot spiced tea is great) + tax, or...
Read moreDecided to try out some local Ethiopian fare because I was in the mood for some spice. This place had the best reviews, and I found out why.
Ordered in advance and picked it up at the restaurant. Very unassuming exterior, it would be easy to overlook it when passing by. Inside, there were few tables in a narrow space, but the smells coming from the kitchen were amazing! The ladies sitting there were friendly and handed me my food. The bag was much heavier than expected.
When I got home and opened the boxes, one a veg sampler and the other beef tibs, it looked like they had to press the food down to close the container. Massive portions, even by my American standards. Seriously, each box was easily 2-3 normal sized servings.
The food was incredible. Each of the different veg types were great in their own regard and made for interesting combinations. The tibs were just out of this world. Great spice level, with hints of surprising other flavors.
This place is definitely worth trying out if you like food that has a little extra heat. Not sure about dining in, but...
Read moreI came for New Years with my friends and ate delicious vegan veggies such as shiro or chickpea powder and lentils, gluten free flatbread (injera), and spiced steak! Service is great and she even gave us seconds which made me feel like I was at home. She made as roasted Ethiopian coffee and allowed us to smell it before she grounded them. She really shared the Ethiopian experience with my friends and I. Awash is a cute and small place with authentic and well-balanced food with protein and veggies. If you are vegan, gluten free, or vegetarian, this is the place for you because Mrs. Zeet will make you lentils and chickpeas for protein and cabbage and carrots, beets, and collard greens for other nutrients. And if you are a meat lover, you will be blown away by the flavors of the meat she cooks for you.It is also cheaper than the rest of the Ethiopian...
