Tomo is exceptional. Jin is a local treasure. There is no good reason for inland Naugatuck to have such high-quality sushi — except for the hard work, good taste, and obvious skill of Jin and his team at Tomo.
I grew up in Naugatuck but have lived elsewhere for decades: mainly Atlanta (where direct overnight flights brought in daily top-shelf seafood from as far away as Tokyo), Philadelphia, and Oakland and San Francisco. So I’m no expert but I think I have a decent sample to compare against.
Honestly, it is implausible how good Tomo is. Just sitting there on Route 68 in Naugatuck. A real gem. And be sure not to get just the fried rolls — though I’m sure those are good. (My family seems to love all that.) Jin is regularly slicing out the delicious sashimi and more interesting dishes.
If you haven’t been to Tomo, get there! It’s a standout. And Jin himself is a pleasure — as is his staff. A visit to Jin and Tomo is always a must when I’m visiting CT — and has been for years. Delicious stuff!
Thanks for all the great meals, Tomo! Look forward to...
Read moreI recently had two very different experiences with Japanese restaurants in the area. While TOMO 68 in Naugatuck was a disappointment due to inaccurate hours, I had a great experience at Sakura Japanese Steak House in Watertown.
Sakura Japanese Steak House was open when their online hours indicated they would be, and the staff was friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was lively and fun, and the food was delicious. The hibachi grill was especially impressive, with skilled chefs putting on a show as they cooked our meals right in front of us.
In contrast, my experience at TOMO 68 was frustrating due to inaccurate hours. Despite calling ahead to confirm, the restaurant closed almost an hour earlier than advertised, leaving me disappointed and inconvenienced.
Overall, I would highly recommend Sakura Japanese Steak House in Watertown for anyone looking for a fun and delicious Japanese dining experience. On the other hand, I would suggest double-checking the hours for TOMO 68 or perhaps choosing another restaurant that is more reliable with...
Read moreI've been here probably 30 or 40 times for both sit down and take out lunch and dinner and have never once had any issue in any aspect. Food is always amazing, wait times more than reasonable, and pricing so good that a few times I though they messed up the bill. They also offer a few Thai options but typically I'm not "that" guy that will order like Thai at a Chinese place, or Sushi at a Chinese place, etc. Only because every single time I've tried...I was always disappointed 100% of the time. So being a guy with a good go-to Thai place's that I love, and with a deep love of the style, it was big move to even attempt it here. It was a matter of convenience and craving and it turned out okay!
Not saying the Thai is as good as at one of the other Thai places, but I'm thinking they may have abducted a Thai guy from somewhere. It tastes pretty legit and the fact that it's one stop for both Sushi AND Thai, I'm on board. Quick jump off route 8 in Naugatuck and you'll be on and off in no time, a...
