Loved this hometown eatery. Was invited there by a fellow Veteran to drop off paperwork at the lunch hour. I live a good 35 miles away and thought, …”this had better be damned good BBQ!” And,…boy oh boy it sure was! I could easily tell its was a local fav the moment I drove up. Plenty of older pick up trucks, some other vehicles, just pouring in. Folks walking out happy, smiling, rubbing their bellies. Inside, I was very pleased to discover a welcoming, friendly staff who were ALL eager to make me feel right at home. Especially, the smiley wait staff. Menu was very affordable. See it online for yourself. I chose a chopped Pulled Pork Sandwich Combo with sweet tea. (Thats right. You BET I got the jalapeño bun. Lol) Powerfully smoked, deep flavored pulled pork BBQ, with coleslaw to make even my moma, “…say sumthin”, and plenty fixings. To me, atmosphere counts in a hometown spot like Rabel’s. Everyone in the place seemed to know one another by name, all the way from the hungry fellas in the cashier line to the work crews lining long tables filled with ice cold Texas sweet tea and plenty of BBQ goodies and fixings. I’ll be sure to get back by Rabels every time I am even near Nixon Texas or the surrounding area. Its simply worth taking your time to detour out in the rural Texas backroads. Get off the grid. The BBQ and hospitality is off the chain and about as American as any good apple pie! Get there fast!

Will a 35-minute drive out into the country and a little town called New Berlin Texas. Heard about this place on a food group page decided to give it a try small cozy country kind of place. Plenty of seating inside. Walk-up service at the counter with a screen with all their choices of meals. Tonight I had the to meet plate with brisket and sausage. My size were mac and cheese and pinto beans. And a drink. I know times are tough out there in the food industry but was a little bit high for that meal. The food was good. Not the best I've had not the worst I've had but it was decent. But $21 for the to meet plate and two sides not including a drink and then add the drink on and then add the tax on it got the expensive real fast. If you're in the area I certainly suggest that you stop in and give it a try. I might stop in again if I'm ever in that area but it won't be a dedicated trip out to this restaurant now that I've eaten there. But I suggest that you give it a try, it wasn't bad and worth the 35-minute trip.

I drive by Rabel’s once or twice a month. Recently I had someone tell me they have the best brisket so needed to try for myself. I emailed ahead of time to ensure that the meats and sauces were gluten free which was confirmed. I ordered a variety of meats to go at the restaurant while my dog waited in the car (turned on with the AC blasting). I let the front staff know I needed to step out while I waited for my food and someone from the back came forward to let me know he had been keeping an eye out from the kitchen and my dog was doing well. Of course I couldn’t wait until getting home to try the food. BEST turkey I have had from a BBQ restaurant ever. Moist and perfectly seasoned. Pork ribs and brisket were also so good! Nothing disappointed me about this trip. Loved the friendly staff, the atmosphere was relaxed and the food was delicious. The homemade style pickles pushed my experience over the top.

We used Rabel’s Roadhaus BBQ for our caterer for our wedding on 12/9/23 at the Chandelier of Gruene. We had great experiences with them up until the wedding day. Their food was fantastic when trying it in the restaurant, but the wedding night it was pretty dried out which was disappointing because we wanted to avoid that if we were going to serve BBQ.

There were a few things that made our day stressful that we want to make sure future couples are aware of before booking with them:

-We made a point to order two salads for my sister and mother in law that are both vegetarian, which was made very clear. Both salads came with bacon bits on them which was very frustrating because they had to be returned and made again without the bacon before they were able to eat them.

-The biggest thing that was the most frustrating is that the caterers refused to cut our wedding cake. We were very confused because we specifically remember asking about cutting the cake when we did our tasting so it was assumed they would do it. The servers with Rabel’s refused to cut the cake because we did not have it in our contract (we were asked to go find our contract in our email which is ridiculous because we didn’t even have our phones). Had we known that this was the case beforehand we would have added it on, we booked so far in advance so it wouldn’t have been an issue. We also would’ve paid to have them cut the cake on the spot, but of course they refused. My mom had to have a friend go run to the store and buy plates and forks for the cake and also find someone to cut the cake for us IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WEDDING, since the servers refused in the moment to help us out with this all because it wasn’t specifically in our contract.

It was very frustrating to have to deal with that stress on our wedding day, and most importantly for the servers to be rude about the entire ordeal. Couples should be made aware of this, and if it’s not explicitly written in the contract that it will not be done (because we had no idea, we assumed everything was covered). We didn’t even know we had to ask for that to be added, if we had known it absolutely would’ve been on the contract months before.

We appreciated the service and enjoyed the food, but dealing with this on the day of our wedding was less than ideal and we would’ve appreciated a little more help from the servers instead of the treatment that was given to our family and the coordinator. They seemed very inexperienced in the catering world, especially catering a large wedding. **All of this has been emailed to our caterer contact but we received no response back, which is shocking considering how nice we were treated by this company up until the...

We are sad Rabel's BBQ relocated because we loved having their delicious REAL SMOKED BBQ in our backyard. But we make the drive to LaVernia to grab the best BBQ brisket and sausage at their new location despite missing the convenience of New Berlin. Their sausage is homemade and slow smoked to perfection just like their brisket, so good!! We buy plenty of meat for snacking on leftovers which no one wants to miss out on. Also, love, love, love their fruit cobblers!! Took home a quart loaded with blueberries (they also had peach that day). We have to alternate on the days they have cherry, too, because this cobbler is my hubby's favorite.

2/1/25 Downgraded to 3 stars after yesterday's visit. Ordered marbled brisket on our 2 meat plate for dine in dinner and, as usual, for our additional 1.5 lb take home order for leftovers. Definitely was not marbled. In fact, there was NO fat whatsoever. Cashier asked if we wanted our receipt, glad we said yes because we were able to verify she ordered what we requested. We just didn't get what we ordered. We assume they didn't have it so they just served us what they had on hand and it was not at all flavorful. Also, we used to be able to get ice cream with our cobbler but this is no longer available, it is removed from the menu though I did ask to be sure. We spent $75 and gas to drive 75 miles round trip because their BBQ was so awesome while in New Berlin. Not anymore! Downgraded to 3* review and forget driving that far to eat so-so food anymore. We didn't mind prices doubling after Rabel's moved because, at least for awhile, it was still the best BBQ. Judging from their website, they grew too big too fast. Too bad! My entire family used to enjoy Rabel's BBQ above all others. It was especially disappointing that my husband chose Rabel's BBQ for his birthday dinner and walked out unhappy only to feel the same way today when...

My in-laws recommend this place since they live in the area and don't want to go to San Antonio since they don't like going to the city. We went this past Sunday, The place looks fine however it's to small for the amount of traffic they get. There was only TVs in one side of the room and I was facing the counter and people waiting in line. We were recommend the Mac & Cheese and were told is really good. We had the RR Club meal w/ Mac & Cheese and the grilled cheese sandwich. The RR club sandwich was okay however it could do without the turkey. I was disappointed with the Mac & Chesse since the Cheesse was so runny it looked like soup and didn't have a good flavor. Maybe if the cheese was thicker it would taste better. I got the grilled cheese with brisket, it had good flavor however, the portion was very small for the amount of money you pay for that. The TX toast was not thick like a real TX road should be and it didn't not had a good portion of brisket for the price since it doesn't even come with a side. If you want to taste a great Mac & Cheese, go to "Reese Bros BBQ",.close to the Alamo Dome in San Antonio TX, they have a poblano Mac & Cheese that is awesome. It's the best Mac & Cheese I've had in a restaurant. For a better Grilled Cheese, " B&B SMOKEHOUSE" IN SA TX comes to mind. They have a really good and tasty grilled cheese with a generous portion of brisket and it comes with a side.

I guess if you live in LA Vernia or around and don't want to drive around to the Souht Side in San Antonio then this place will be okay. Don't be fooled by restaurants in the South Side of SA, it has great places to eat at...
