You can't beat the small-town (village?) ambiance that permeates New Harmony! Stop first and foremost at Black Lodge to mingle with Alex (the owner) and fine selection of workers who greet you with a smile along with perfected skills in making warm/cold, delicious drinks that tantalize the palate and melt away the stress of our routine lives! Afterwards, take time to walk to the Roofless Church, the historic Atheneum, the Labyrinth State Memorial, Cathedral Labyrinth (yes, it's a different one), Tillich Park (named after the famed philosopher Paul Tillich), Firehouse Antiques (lovely owners and great selection), small parks with fountains & sculptures, and delicious eateries! When done, return to Black Lodge to "chillax" again inside or out in the courtyard to enjoy the space, the people, and the peace. If you feel up to it, take a walk during the evening/night hours to embrace the silence that our souls seek. In other words, New Harmony is exactly the kind of place that reminds us that life is worth...
Read moreI was visiting a friend in the area to see the awesome eclipse, and heard about a local coffee roaster while visiting the Athenaeum. Being a sucker for local coffee roasters (and down to my last bag of beans while traveling) I stopped in. Unfortunately they had just closed! Disaster! Smooshing my face against the window they must have noticed my sorrow, because when they unlocked to let out one of the last customers, they let me in! Unexpected! Rescued! I bought 2 bags of the bean they had on tap, and would have been disappointed had I bought only one. There are now 5 places where I will buy coffee beans- Moab Coffee Roasters, Curve Coffee Roasters(Moab), Joshua Tree Coffee Company, Yellow Brick Coffee (Tucson) and Black Lodge Coffee Company. The staff are clever with the banter, the setting is welcoming, the coffee is "ahhhhh, yes. Just what I was looking for!" Worth the trip of the I-64 Interstate! A most...
Read moreBlack Lodge is a charming little coffee shop nestled in the historic town of New Harmony. Not only was the espresso excellent (and made correctly) but they also have the friendliest staff. As soon as we walked in we were greeted pleasantly and taken care of right away. I also noticed they greeted some of the regular customers by name, which doesn’t go unnoticed. I ordered a drink off menu (Miel) and they were happy to accommodate. I spoke with the owner, Alex, who was extremely friendly and genuine, and has an extensive background in coffee. They source their coffee ethically from Brazil and will be happy to tell you about it. The building itself is historic and beautiful. Whether you’re in New Harmony or close by, Black Lodge is...
