As my New Haven pizza weekend drew to a close, I found myself at Michelina’s on State St—a charming bar that, until recently, wasn't on the pizza aficionado's radar. That changed when they introduced their innovative pizza flights: three 6-inch pizzas of your choice, offering a delightful way to sample their offerings.
The Famous Michelina’s: I began with this classic, adhering to my belief that a basic pizza must excel with minimal ingredients. The crushed tomatoes struck a harmonious balance between sweet and savory, while the slightly charred crust imparted a subtle smokiness. Finished with Pecorino, fresh basil, and olive oil, it was an excellent start.
Truffle Honey: Next up was this intriguing combination. Building upon the same crust and tomato base, it featured mozzarella, onions, soppressata, and truffle honey. The saltiness of the soppressata complemented the sweetness of the honey and onions, all underscored by the earthy umami of truffles. It was a symphony of flavors dancing on my palate—a true culinary waltz.
The Carnivore: For the finale, I indulged my inner meat lover. This pizza, built on the same foundation, was adorned with mozzarella, bacon (because bacon improves everything), meatballs, pepperoni, sausage, and soppressata—a medley of cured meats in perfect harmony.
Not stopping at savory, we ventured into dessert with another flight of three sweet 6-inch pizzas:
Nutella, Strawberries, and Whipped Cream: A classic combination that didn't disappoint.
Apple with Vanilla Ice Cream: This standout featured warm hints of cinnamon and cloves, perfectly paired with the cool creaminess of vanilla ice cream—a comforting treat on a chilly Connecticut day.
Strawberry: Simple, fresh, and delightful.
Michelina’s offers great food, an incredibly welcoming staff, and a cozy atmosphere. I highly recommend checking them out for a unique and satisfying...
Read moreMy partner came across this place on social media and wanted to try their pizza flights. They also have a vegan menu which was great for me. We were a party of 6 - 4 adults and 2 kids. Keep in mind, the place was empty. We ordered drinks and had to remind the waitress of my brother in law’s wine twice. We ordered our food - 1 pizza flight, 2 small pizzas, 1 large pizza and wings. A bit after our order was placed, the waitress came back and asked if I wanted the vegan dough which I thought was confusing since I ordered one of their vegan pizzas. My assumption was that the dough was vegan so I recommend clarifying when ordering. All the food came out except my vegan pizza. By the time it arrived everyone was almost done eating. The bill came and was almost $200 which is in my opinion a lot for a basic pizza place. That included an 18% automatic gratuity. The pizza flight was $36. This price was not advertised on the menu and the amount of pizza was about a small so that was quite pricy. I was also charged an extra $7.50 for my pizza. We paid the bill in cash and the waitress asked if I needed change. I said yes since gratuity was already included. My change should have been a little over $5 and the waitress came back and handed me a $5 bill not acknowledging the missing change. It was less than a dollar so I let it go but honestly, who takes it upon themselves to just not give a customer all of their change and say nothing about it. Overall, the super slow service, my food coming out after everyone else was done and the insane bill which was incorrect, we all agreed that it was bad enough of an experience that we’d never go back. Not somewhere I’d ever recommend due to the service alone but the food was ok. Nothing was bad. Just nothing to...
Read moreI wanted to love this place, I spent over $64 to give them a try. I ordered a dessert pizza flight. It was so tough & too hard. I ordered meatballs with pasta, they told me that I would get one big meatball but I received two very hard & dry meatballs with no taste, the pasta & sauce was very bland. I also ordered mozzarella sticks, those were the only thing that I ordered that was good. I’m a chef, I know flavor very well. I’m a mom so I wish I didn’t waste my money. The videos I watched compared to what I paid for & received do not match. Those meatballs were too tough & dry. Those pizza flights were too hard. I had to throw the pasta out after adding parm & salt. It’s okay to add salt to the water when cooking pasta. This was Sunday night. 2/2/25 Maybe this was an off night, too bad I wasted my money. I wish them the best.
Ps: by me saying the ONLY thing I like was something as basic as those mozzarella sticks, because I couldn’t say anything bad about those. I wish you responded sooner, I would have taken a picture of those dry stiff meatballs. I’m never going to exaggerate. I’m a foodie foodie & my dishes are top notch. The food I ordered had no flavor, the meat balls were tough. Pasta was flavorless, the sauce was flavorless. I tried two other places for their meatballs & BOTH were EXCELLENT Est. Est. Est. Pizza, and Tom & Pats Those meatballs were SO GOOD! Those meatballs I had from here were tough, dry, & flavorless. I wanted to love this place because of how it...
