Sometimes the best stories don’t start with a plan. My wife and I were out in Yonkers, NY, doing Instacart runs, and somehow the day pulled us an hour and 20 minutes north, deep into New Haven, CT. Hungry, tired, and just about ready to call it a night, we stumbled across a little hidden spot called Munchies.
And when I say “hidden,” I mean it—this is the type of hole-in-the-wall shop you’d never find if you went searching for it. Picture this: two road-weary travelers, neon glow outside, and a kitchen-sized shop that looked like it had a secret to tell.
Inside, the magic wasn’t just in the food—it was in the hands of a woman who I can only assume was the owner. Running the whole show, she cooked with the kind of passion you can taste in every bite. The sandwiches? Absolute perfection—layers of flavor, fresh, bold, unforgettable. The cheese fries? Golden, crispy, and smothered in cheesy greatness that felt like pure comfort on a plate. My wife and I just looked at each other mid-bite, speechless, both thinking: “We found it.”
This wasn’t just dinner. It was a moment. A scene straight out of a movie where an unexpected turn leads you right to the best part of the story. Exceptional food, heartfelt service, and an experience my wife and I will never forget.
If New Haven has a hidden treasure, Munchies—and the powerhouse woman...
Read moreI’ve eaten from here 3 times in the past two weeks and must say *CHEF’S KISS. I had the Canadian tux, el guapo, and hosoi. All were delicious. When I called for my last sandwich, the hosoi, I asked if it could be made with love and they said ABSOLUTELY! When I looked at my sandwich I saw a note from Jon that made my day! I added the photo. The staff is so friendly and they work fast. The fries are also fresh and crispy. So far my favorite is the hosoi. I got pickles on the side but was surprised by how much flavor was introduced to my taste buds when I added them. Canadian tux is a close runner up because of that amazing bacon jam! Flavors are insaneee! The el guapo was good, but i didn’t get any of the Gouda taste that I was highly anticipating. Overall, I am a forever fan of this spot. Katie and Jon, I love you guys lol
Also, this is a takeout spot. You order your food and you...
Read moreI guess I am the last to know about this New Haven treasure judging by the reviews. On a whim I checked it out. I used to work down the street. In those days Upper State Street was not as well equipped with great food choices. When I walked up to this modest, even tiny, shop and checked the menu I knew I hit pay dirt. The choices displayed a width and depth of culinary adventure to rival the entire series of Raiders of the Lost Arc movies. I had the chopped cheese. I didn't think it was possible to get one outside of the Bronx. What I got was chopped cheese to the seventh power with a symphony of taste and aroma that overwhelmed my senses. When you eat these subs you will realize that every sub, hoagie, poorboy, hero, sandwich you ever had before was a cripple. Fresh ingredients prepared with genius and...
