I have been craving for Indonesian food and I finally visited this restaurant in New Haven. I was smitten by the high ratings and good reviews. I ordered the following for take out:
Beef rendang - at $19 and one, yes just one big cube of beef, it is way too expensive. I felt I was ripped off. The sauce was "okay" but I believe it tasted a bit far from what I have tasted in Singapore and Indonesia where the original version came from.
Spicy buttered chicken - I was shocked this came out too dark, too crispy and too saucy which was very different from the photo in the menu. It tasted good though but it was not spicy as I was expecting so my kids loved it. They should correct the photo in the online menu to meet the customer's expectation.
Nasi Goreng with beef - This also failed the mark for me. There was not even a traditional sauce provided. It tasted good but it tasted similar to a Thai beef basil fried rice without the basil. I wished there was a topping of a fried egg would have made a big difference too!
Egg Fried Rice - same taste as the Nasi Goreng with just the eggs mixed with it and way smaller portion.
Thank God I did not order the buntut soup as I imagine it now having small portions of the oxtail and paying $25. I do not highly recommend this restaurant but if you want to taste the food for a change, go ahead.
Lastly, their take out containers do not seal and close properly and the beef rendang sauce dripped inside the paper bag. I was disappointed really so I will not...
Read moreVery unsuspecting little Indonesian restaurant that provides great service, conversation, and amazing food. I personally enjoyed several of the different appetizers which I feel were very fairly priced and allow you an opportunity to try different options. The beef rendang was absolutely delicious. Very size-able portion they definitely do not skimp out on you here. Ever more important was how flavorful and juicy the meat was, the curry that the beef is cooked will hit you with layers of flavor. And for those patrons who don’t favor a coconut based fish, the beef rendang, although has coconut as one of the ingredients, is not overpowered by the addition of coconut to the dish. 100% worth a try and I look forward to making the trip from NY back again to sample their...
Read moreThis restaurant always leaves me speechless and fulfills my expectations. I have never had authentic Asian food like TOKA Asian Kitchen offers to its customers. The interior environment is super stylish and compliments the vibe of this place. The plates they serve on is super unique and authentic, it compliments the food so well. My personal favorite dishes are the chicken satay with a flavorful peanut sauce, rock shrimp, chicken gyoza. For entrees the Toka Curry is chefs kiss. I travel 1 hour and 30 minutes, and this is the dish that keeps me coming back for me. Chicken Katsu and all Noodle entrees are amazing. For dessert I highly recommend the Pisang Goreng. I love this place and will be returning...
