YUM. This place is legendary for vegan food, whether your preference is perfect sourdough bread, decadent desserts, or healthier whole foods/plant-based/unprocessed options. When you walk in, you’re greeted with the smell of delicious bread “made from scratch with wild sourdough and organic flours baked in our stone hearth oven.” Yes please. I suspect this location supplies the bread for their second location on Carondelet also, since that one didn’t have the glorious bread smell. Breads on Oak bread seems to be a bread destination for meat-eaters and vegans alike. I had the opportunity to try the multigrain loaf during my visit and loved it.

The sweets - I enjoyed free samples of the chocolate chip cookie (fantastic), the tea biscuit (chewy/hearty), and something gooey and delicious and peanut buttery (not sure if it was a cookie or the blondie.)

The healthier/savory options - I really enjoyed the Market Gardener Salad, made with “fresh greens, house made smoked tempeh, sunflower seeds, carrots, fresh cucumbers, and avocado.” The miso dressing was great. The real star of the show was the tempeh. Just standard big brand tempeh I think but smoked and marinated in something teriyaki esque that was packed with umami and sweetness and left me wanting more.

Lastly, I was delighted with the wide selection of local kombucha, with multiple flavors from Big Easy Kombucha (fairly widely available across the city; delicious fruity taste) and La Rive kombucha (another Louisiana brand that I did not encounter at any other stores or restaurants, with unique flavors and a light, less sweet flavor profile, and nice delicate effervescence).

In summary, Breads on Oak is a must-visit. The uptown location in particular is worth the trip. You’re...

It is cute. It is on "Oak Street". The bread & bakery selections are good. And we need healthier food options in this town.

However!!!! My first (and last) experience evoked a tad of anger. I ordered a ham/cheese sandwich for which I paid $8.95. Not a bad price, if only there had been ham and cheese on the sandwich! What I got was ONE small deli size cut of ham, and I never did find the cheese. Essentially I paid $8.95 for bread and greens, and the bread was nothing special. I observed another person's ham & cheese sandwich which appeared to receive the same portions, so it was not some kind of an error. I need protein, and had to pay for a real lunch after I left.

I was with a friend and didn't want to deal with this issue that day, since we had limited time. The tables also were full of (satisfied?) customers, and my comments to a manager would have been overheard by all. So I chose to assume that vegans are happy to pay $9 for their bread and vegetables on Oak Street.

I think either this should not be labeled as a ham and cheese sandwich, or the price should be brought down. I gave 2 stars because there may be other reasonably priced delicious items they serve, but I will not return to find out. I don't like getting...

Let me start off that I really appreciate this 100 vegan coffee/food/bakery spot. I visit every time I come to New Orleans. I have visited both locations, the original is just so darn cute, and I have the outdoor patio area. The downtown one is very convenient. I am giving 5 solid starts for the customer service in both locations. People working here are super sweet, friendly, helpful and just you get the feeling that they honestly enjoy their job. The cafe just has good vibes, that is all.

The food, I ordered the French Strip sandwich with is mushrooms on a baguette and I love their breads, they are yummy and I am from SF so bread is on point. I just felt like maybe the sandwich was missing some more spices, maybe but the picked broccolini was very interesting. I also got the teabiscuit and I felt like it could have been more moist. The coffee - I got the regular drip and it just tasted very watered down, not a...

Best vegan spot we visited in New Orleans. There’s a huge variety of sandwiches and pastries available at the counter, and if you somehow can’t find something you like there, there’s a menu with other plates and soups as well. I had the pumpkin breakfast biscuit with andouille sausage and boy oh boy was it good. The biscuit was creamy and savory, the scramble light and fluffy, and the sausage cooked to perfection with just the right amount of kick. Also tried their quiche which was creamy but not so much that the quiche was too dense and heavy (as many quiches end up being). My travel buddy tried the bread pudding with the whiskey sauce and reports that it was “very, very good.” We bought some small loves of bread to-go as we head out of New Orleans this morning. We’ll miss this place greatly and look forward to coming back soon!

My husband and I checked this place out because we love baked goods not knowing it was a 100% vegan restaurant. I opted not to try any of the meat substitutes but the vanilla glazed brioche roll I had was delicious! The chocolate chip cookie was chewy and just right. You wouldn't know you were eating something vegan. My husband had the croque monsieur. It was pretty good but like almost all meat substitutes the ham was a little lackluster. Still tasty though! I think I'll definitely be back, and whether you're vegan or not it's worth checking out. The Sunday we visited it was pretty busy but service was pretty quick. Staff was friendly and I love the use of eco-friendly to go cups for coffee. One warning--coffee is MOLTEN HOT, so be careful.
