For some time now this establishment has been reducing its portions. It’s now become so evident that it’s become out of hand. Prices haven’t remained the same either, they have gone up. I took the time to review their menus from days past and I eat here regularly both inside and take out. I even go as far as some do and tip the chefs preparing it, you won’t get more potions, they will forget your tip given a min after you gave it considering they have takeout orders to deal with in the hundreds, but you’ll get some insignificant little appetizer they will quickly put together. Nothing changes here, patrons keep coming and the value keeps diminishing. Thin slices of dish for the money they are asking for when ordering both sushi and sashimi are obviously pathetic. When it comes to quality they are not bad. But I’ve been to the best. I’ve experienced first hand what the really best imports taste like and I know what things cost since I frequent Fulton and I understand vendor pricing. For the money being asked I’ve even been served sushi with cold rice in house, quality control and just not there any longer when the owner would be there and ensure thing ran smoothly, she was always on top of things. She always showed how she valued the clients coming in, she ensured everyone coming frequently would have a good time and be fed well. The staff continues to always be attentive and the place always clean enough. But things here clearly have changed. I know it’s been a struggle ever since Covid. I understand inflation and costs are going up but serving smaller amounts for higher prices isn’t an answer and cold flavorless rice is never an option. Other establishments on the island are managing to serve good amounts of fish and keep their quality high, and they keep their rice hot and correctly seasoned. I’ve witnessed first hand how the volcano salad had been reduced by size three times over 5 years, how once it was a salad purchased for the table for all seated, and now it’s slightly larger than a large spoon, and the price, double. I’ve seen how other appetizers have been reduced in size.
Sorry genki, after my recent experience last week where I spent $80 and barely got two trays of sushi, that’s over and done with.
No idea what happened here but if I had to guess it’s a mix of over staying and high rent, along with inflated vendor agreements pushing them to do this. Perhaps it’s gouging too.
Either way Genki, Good luck to you. I’ll Be taking my...
Read moreNot sure how this place has such a high rating. I hadn’t been here in years & happened to be on the Island & remembered it being really good, but today my sushi was not edible (I threw away the spicy tuna roll & I do not like to waste food). The spicy tuna roll had zero flavor, tasted like nothing, just a mushy texture in my mouth. Shrimp tempura roll had no shrimp taste, just a hot crunch. I ordered a spicy scallop roll. She asked if I wanted crunch, so I said yes, well it was basically a crunchy roll with a few tiny lil pieces of scallop. Got all of this with brown rice, which looked oddly colored purple, wasn’t very appetizing. The rolls fell apart when I was trying to eat them & I am adept at using chopsticks. The seaweed salad & miso soup were tasty! My sister loved the gyoza & said the sweet potato rolls were delicious, hence the 2 stars. However, the sushi in my eyes I would give zero stars, but just can’t give a horrible review like that, sadly though this is a sushi joint, it’s in the name Genki Sushi. Will sadly not be going back, at least not for sushi. Maybe the restaurant was just having an off day, thank goodness this was all on lunch special, would have been worse having paid full price for it. Wouldn’t...
Read moreI’ve been to Genki several times throughout the years and under different ownership. The current incarnation is just OK. Went to an early dinner with some friends, so there were only two other tables being occupied. From the moment we sat down, we were rushed. Rushed to place our orders, then rushed to eat, with our plates being taken away while there was still food on them.
All for no apparent reason as, again, there were plenty of open tables. We were watched at close range by the staff, who pounced on our table when they thought we might be done, even though we weren’t. One waitress was kind, another was brusk, and yet another appeared to be a literal child. What is happening?
We just wanted to have a mellow, relaxing dinner while catching up with each other but that was impossible. I’ve never felt so hounded to eat and pay and get out of a restaurant like that before. Not bothering to return, which is a shame because the meal tasted really nice. However, Misaki in Woodrow has slightly better sushi and much better service.
As far as delivery: service is bad, just don’t bother with it. Gave them the benefit of the doubt and tried again with the same result of a 2+ hour wait, and sushi was inedible by the time...
