A beautiful Autumn in NYC prompted me to try this diner I have walked passed many times. I’ve always enjoyed seeing families, elderly couples and solo customers enjoying this cute corner spot that is just a hop skip and jump away from the MET. I sat outside and enjoyed listening to others’ conversations as I waited to give my order. I ordered the Lumberjack; which consisted of pancakes, two eggs and a choice of bacon, sausage and some other meat I can’t remember. My food came rather quickly, which was a nice surprise because it’s a Sunday at a time where Brunch in the city is at its peak. My sunny side up eggs were cooked perfectly, I love them to be very runny and snot-like, doused in Cholula and then I dip the pancakes in for the kill! No need for butter or syrup! It’s a whole lotta YUM! Their pancakes were fluffy and the bottom had a very nice crisp. Here’s the unappetizing part and why this is a one and done diner for me: While I waited for the waiter to run my card I just wanted to enjoy myself and the atmosphere and let my food digest. Sun in NYC is hard to come by when Autumn comes around and I like to take advantage of not only being outside but dining outside as well. I hadn’t signed my check less than two minutes and a gentlemen, whom was either the owner or the manager approached my table and asked me to leave. He said he needed my table. There wasn’t a line of people waiting and there was plenty of unoccupied seating around me. It is important to note-even though I was a party of 1 the tables are small so I was in no way taking up a 4 top; you can fit two people possibly three but that’s if you don’t order anything to drink! HAHA. In all seriousness, I’m also highly aware and sensitive if people are waiting for a table and I’ll leave the table quickly so they can enjoy. I live in the city, I get it. I made a noise like uh, put my coat on and left. As I headed toward the MET and decided I won’t be wanting a seat at any of their tables because even though the food was good the experience left a bad taste in my mouth. It’s important for an establishment to be sensitive to how the customer will feel from the restaurant experience and unfortunately the feeling coming away was...
Read moreMy girl and I were in Central Park, she was craving some Greek food and found this place on her map. Just a few blocks away from The Met, I knew this place would be pretty expensive but I didn't want to make her walk thirty blocks while hungry to get a Greek meal for half the price.
The menu featured a variety of items from classic diner food for like $20 to more fancy items like steaks for $40. The classic Greek food items were somewhere in between, in the $25-35 range. There was plenty of outdoor seating surrounded by plexiglass with a good amount of indoor seating as well. My vaccine card was checked after entry. The restaurant also had a single bathroom accommodating one occupant at a time, which either had a line or was vacant for minutes at a time. I guess everyone needs to use the bathroom at the same time.
Anyway, we ordered two gyros, which was unlike the gyros I was used to from eating at halal carts. It was four pieces of gyro meat on top of a pita bread (and it also came with fries and a salad). The portion size was large enough that I was feeling full and my girl couldn't finish everything on her plate. Taste-wise, very average. For $27 (with tax our two gyros came out to be $60.76), I was expecting an exceptional meal and the gyro was a letdown. Judging by my two stars, you could tell it was clearly not worth it.
However, as we began walking back to Central Park I felt the food in my stomach. It was pushing against the walls. I asked my girl and at first she was saying she was just "stuffed" but later began to say the food was sitting in her stomach "like a lead ball", which described how I felt if that ball had jagged corners. For a $30 food item, I expected to be comforted and invigorated, but instead I felt as if I had just eaten a portion of cold McDonald's french fries. The feeling did not go away for over an hour. The feeling of the food in my stomach was almost worse than the hunger I went in with. Only reason it was not worse was because I knew it brought me closer to my calorie goal for the day.
In summary, I recommend this place to people who love fast food presented in a decent fashion and have the desire to overspend by...
Read moreI had one of the most blatantly racist experiences of my life here. I walked into the restaurant and was seated by a nice man (he is the only reason that I gave the service two starts instead of one). For context, I was the only black customer in the establishment. When i first sat down, i noticed that the white ladies who worked there were giving me nasty looks from across the restaurant. Immediately, i got the feeling that i was not wanted there. I even attempted to smile at them but their faces remained the same. My server (the nice man) came to take my order (I ordered a bagel and a latte for about $11). The ladies were still starting at me, and after a few minutes my food was ready. One of the ladies (the one who was staring the hardest) brought me my meal and I said “hi” with a smile and “thank you so much.” She refused to smile back, she refused to speak to me, she wouldn’t even look at me. I am not even exaggerating when I say that she honestly looked disgusted. the staff had foreign accents so i assumed that maybe she just couldn’t speak English. After dropping off my food, she proceeded to walk over to a white man, and in the friendliest way possible, speaking the clearest English, she greeted him and took his order. I watched her make small talk with other white customers while i was there. Meanwhile, this lady refused to even look me in my eyes, much less smile or speak. I was genuinely shocked. Not that it should matter, but I am a woman, 21 years old, 5’7 and 110 pounds. I was not doing anything “threatening” or “suspicious” in any way. If i tried to leave without paying, it would have been incredibly easy for them to stop me because of my size. My reason for providing this context is to explain that all i did to make this woman dislike me was simply exist. Despite my terrible experience, I tipped my server $5 on an $11 bill. I would not recommend this place if you are black, or to anyone at all. If you can’t politely service ALL of your customers, you are providing...
