Rosewood Worst Place.
a 2-bedroom suite at the Carlyle Hotel in New York from March 22-24, 2024 (OL LEC, Booking #11375797) for a staggering $6,926.82, I anticipated an experience befitting the luxury and elegance often associated with this storied hotel.
the reality was a stark departure from expectations, characterized by a series of disappointments and discomforts.
Upon Arrival: Immediately, a peculiar struggle over our luggage with the hotel staff ensued, necessitating six phone calls and an hour's wait to have our bags finally returned to our room.
Utility Issues: Our stay was further compromised by a one-hour blackout on March 23rd, purportedly to honor a NYC "woke green policy" event, an inconvenience that was neither anticipated nor appreciated.
No Hot Water: Additionally, the lack of hot water from 9 PM on March 23rd to 11 AM.
Everything is so old and bad maintenance.Lot of water noises, WC flushing noises.
Room and Comfort: The suite, advertised with grandeur, felt totally cramped and outdated. My son was block inside his room door and closet door tangled together, crazily he had to call me on my cell phone to escape doors blocking him.
The air conditioning system, seemingly untouched for decades, was totally inefficient and noisy. The fact that windows wouldn't open and the absence of a terrace in the suite only added to the discomfort. Pervasive musty odors and dim lighting, especially in the minuscule outdated bathrooms, underscored a general sense of neglect.
Dining Experience: Our anticipation for the Café Carlyle mini concert booked was marred by obvious favoritism shown to neighbors tipping staff over registered guests.
Despite our reservation we waited 12 min, and finally we were offered a table in the corridor.
i had to pay $100 extra to manager directly for a table at the piano bar, leading us to dine at Bernardin instead of the hotel. we were NOT refunded the paid dinner on tock but only proposed to come back tomorrow. claim pending.
The breakfast service, similarly, run by a third-party restaurant with opaque pricing, favoritism again neighbors tipping ‘VIPs’ over genuine hotel guests. It’s a small mafia with management complicity. exemplified by a baffling $177.39 charge for a modest breakfast. when you ask an extra croissant, they charge a pastry basket.
The hotel's atmosphere was further marred by the extensive presence everywhere of ultra cheap tourists that purchased travel agent discounted USA tours, contributing to a less-than-exclusive environment. The absence of a dress code was glaringly evident, with all guests in flip-flops and T-shirts crowding the lobby and utilizing rooms to their maximum++ occupancy.
The hotel's elevator system was deficient, tiny (barely 1m²) and slow lifts causing ++ wait times, highlighting the hotel's gross mismanagement of basic operations and guest comfort. Despite a full-time operator, mandated by the New York Fire Department for the 80-year-old system, accessibility was a major failing. Disabled guests are notably disadvantaged, unable to reach upper floors due to a policy that reroutes the elevator to the first floor in emergencies.
Conclusion: The Carlyle Hotel, as experienced during our stay, fell woefully short of the 5-star luxury it purports to offer. The stark disparity in treatment between hotel guests and favored neighbors VIPs, coupled with outdated facilities, a lack of basic amenities like hot water, and a general atmosphere of neglect and mismanagement, paints a disappointing picture.
The presence of East Europe tourists in beach casual attire, taking advantage of discounted tours and overcrowding the hotel, detracts significantly from the exclusivity and elegance one might expect.
myriad issues encountered, from service failings to logistical inadequacies, serve as a cautionary tale for potential guests, underscoring that a prestigious name and address cannot compensate for fundamental hospitality failures. I advise totally against staying at the Carlyle Hotel, it fails to live up to its promise of luxury and...
Read moreI am someone who is fortunate enough to stay and have stayed in many 5 Star hotels all over the world. Some leave you feeling exquisite with every level of perfection and service, some leave you feeling robbed and resentful of the money you paid. ||The Carlyle is a hotel where they seem to have the focus on things that don’t really make a 5 star hotel, you don’t need someone to push the rotary door at the entrance, you don’t need someone to push the elevator button, you don’t need a person to walk you to a table, to then have a ‘Captain’ to then have a server. Oh and by the way they ALL need tipping apparently all the time. I find it all rather vulgar, there is nothing classy or refined about this. ||The whole tipping culture is, in my opinion, totally out of hand. Everyone I spoke to in the hotel felt as awkward and uncomfortable as we did. The constant demand for tipping at a serious level 25% for each person.. So for Breakfast that’s 25% for the server and an additional 25% for tbeCaptain oh and an auto gratuity as well, this is ridiculous. I spoke to people, who like us, used the stairs or the back entrance to avoid the awkwardness of the tip expectation. I understand that the hotel (and other organisations) don’t pay their staff properly so expect it from the guests in tips, can I suggest companies, who are clearly charging enough, pay their staff properly and save us all feeling awkward. ||Everything is crazily expensive but for no good reason, when you have a basic continental breakfast of pastries, yoghurts and fruits and it is nothing special to then receive the $300 bill, this firmly, for me, puts it in the ‘felt robbed’ category. ||How ever much money one has are there really people who are happy to just waste it like this, extraordinary if so. ||The rooms are ok, cannot say more than that really. I booked the hotel as the advertised text stated that the hotel has 190 rooms most of which have sweeping views of Central Park. We had 3 rooms and not basic rooms, all had views of a wall…||The whole service appears to be set up around needing to ask for things that should, for a 5 star hotel, be naturally provided. Example being the Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash, with 2 adults in each room we had tiny metal tubes (very irritating to use) that appeared each to be mostly full of air, we never had enough to use. Therefore requiring us to call down to request more, and yes you guessed it then having to tip the person bringing it up. ||The Airconditioning in the room was pre set to a maximum cooling temperature. So as much as you tried to cool the room more it appeared the AC was set, as a general hotel default to 20 degrees, therefore never achieving a cooler temperature and often not achieving that during the hot days. I understand it saves money for the hotel but when you are in a 5 star hotel this is not right at all, especially at the cost everyone is paying. ||I suspect that the reviews one reads from hotel critics are somewhat different to reality. When you are provided with the best rooms with the views and don’t have to worry about tipping everyone and anyone the whole experience is somewhat different. ||In summary, if this wasn’t in NYC you would feel robbed paying more than $300 a night, however it is more like $2,000 a night for no good reason that I could see.. do yourself a favour, unless you are happy to burn cash for no good reason, and find yourself...
Read moreAfter reaching out for a remedy from our experience for afternoon tea - and not getting a response back, this is all we are left with. Our afternoon tea experience on Saturday 10/26 was nothing short of a travesty. This was our second time joining you for Afternoon Tea with friends coming to the Carlye for the very first time. We had raved about our previous wonderful experience, and my husband and I were excited to share it again.
The main issue came down to the vegan and vegetarian food offerings for tea service, which turned out to be one and the same. Firstly, the scones were absolutely awful and quite frankly inedible. Please see pictures for reference. They were overbaked, birttle and just fell apart like a bisuit. We asked the server if we could swap them out for the regular plain scones to which we were obliged to one scone each, but these were just one mark higher on the awful scale! These were also over baked and burned. Quite frankly the vegan scones should not even be served to customers in the way that they disintegrated in our hands trying to spread jam on them.
As far as the finger sandwiches go, egg salad was not offered as a vegetarian option for my partner, but was offered as part of the regular service and we were shocked to see one of the sandwiches offere was peanut butter and jelly to the both of us! For a 5-star hotel, this is far below expectations!! There was also a severe lack in variety for dessert options as we were served small chocolate tart-like discs and two purple triangles of some sort.
The server was nice, but did not meet five-star expectations as our party was not ever offered any water as well as none of the food was as per custom when it was all placed in front of us. Once it was all dropped off, we never really saw him again until it was time to ask for the check. My husband was also served flat non-alcoholic French Bloom and when he asked for a replacement, we were told there was no more. I was actually quite shocked, as this was not my expectation from a 5-star hotel, and more importantly The Carlyle!
A far cry from our last visit when were told there wasn’t any more, your team went off-site at that precise moment to retrieve it. He suggested a mocktail to the server, but after the dismay with the sight of the food he changed his mind. We didn’t even want to ask for a refresh on the tea itself, which I will admit was the only part of this that was pleasing.
Also of note was the disruption of what I can only assume was the Bar traffic, with a long line strewn across the center of the room for a time and people criss-crossing about like a sort of mini grand central. Please forgive my brutal honesty, but we could not let this go without informing you of our experience, especially at this price point. We came from out of state to dine with you which was supposed to be our main event for the weekend, but sadly we were left with a feeling of extreme disappointment and completely...
