Betty Lee Jean’s Kitchen — Restaurant in Newark

We stopped at Betty Lee Jeans yesterday, looking to enjoy a good soul food meal! It was everything but good. I am all for supporting black owned businesses. But the food was horrible 🥺🥺🥺. The turkey wings were too spicy covered in some type of gravy have no clue what it was. The yams were burnt, the cornbread was too sweet!! The collard greens tasted spongy, the rice was cold. I asked for an uptown they didn't have it made. We were offered Snapples in a bottle. I requested lemonade the waitress offered soda. I don't drink soda and have nothing against soda drinkers. But come on Sis! Finally I asked for water and was brought a plastic bottle of Nestle Life water. On top of that were given plastic forks to eat with. I was done! My Father In Law ordered the Oxtails and they were so greasy and tough he could not chew them! The only good thing from the entire meal was the Macaroni and Cheese and that was suspect. Needless to say we were on the fence about paying for the food. But we ordered it and did not want to cause a scene. Therefore, we all paid and left quietly. Before we made it home, the food was tossed 😫😫😫 Hopefully, in time the food will improve. But for now, we will not be dinning at Betty Lee Jeans. We were sore disappointed! I bought the fish dinner with 2 sides Mac n cheese/ yams there was a lot of grease soaked under the fish very salty, had to use the tartar sauce to kill some of the salt on fish.The Mac cheese was dried out even the yams had a burnt taste waste of money for 3 disgusting dinners..I know how to cook soul food I think your food was horrible just that I was in the area n decided to give u guys a try never again will I try this nasty place the lady at the counter couldn’t even get my order correct..I would love to call my credit card for a refund...

I was totally impressed with the 25 year old Black owner. He was charming, energetic and loaded with hospitality!!! We love the school bus mural and the civil rights leader wall in the restaurant. The food was very flavorful and there was not an excessive waiting time. I ordered the cat fish nuggets, Mac n cheese and yams.
