Worlds First Italian Style Hot — Restaurant in Newark

I'm doing a deep dive into the history of Newark Style Italian Hot Dogs, so of course I had to go to the exact spot at South 9th St. and 14th Ave. in #Newark, #NJ where they were invented all the way back in 1933! Though no longer affiliated with the iconic Jimmy Buff's Italian Hot Dogs that started out here, it can be tough to shake off the past.

"You can change the name on the sign 100 times," says the cook at World's First Italian Style Hot Dog, inc., "but people are gonna keep calling it Jimmy Buff's!"

That much is true as far as I could tell. In the short time I spent inside, I heard several customers refer to it that way, but the folks working here take a lot of pride in what they have to offer.

The #IHD itself was perfectly prepared, true to form with all the prerequisites. Skinless all beef Best Provisions hot dogs, crispy potatoes, delicious cooked fresh peppers and onions, mustard on the bottom, ketchup on top, and of course it's all stuffed into the famous "pizza bread" delivered fresh by a local Newark bakery.

"When that bread is fresh," the cook adds, "you can really taste it!"

I had a double hot dog/sausage combo. No regrets there.

I cannot praise this restaurant enough! The recent renovation has transformed the space into a beautiful and inviting environment. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by Kayla whose warmth and attentiveness makes you feel right at home. Not only is the atmosphere delightful, but the food is amazing and tastes as good as I remembered growing up many years ago. Every bite is just as amazing as the last keeping me coming back week after week since they've reopened. If you're in Newark do yourself a favor...
