This is a classic Portuguese BBQ style in Newark NJ. I used to go here as a kid when I was very small. I remember getting huge trays of chicken and ribs with my parents as takeout. I was taking my girlfriend to see a friend in Newark and afterwards we remembered this location.
We sat for dine in at the restaurant and used street parking on Bloomfield Ave. They start you off with a buttered Portuguese style roll. Very soft and delicious. We ordered some short ribs in a full platter and a side of the pork ribs. This type of BBQ is more of a dry rub than your St Louis style of ribs.
A huge platter of yellow rice, crispy fries, short ribs, and pork ribs came out. They smelled amazing with a smoky-char smell. The first thing I tried was the fry. Very thin fries with a firm crispiness. Very lightly salter to compensate for the flavorful meats. These are delicious with the house BBQ sauce on the table in a squirt style dispenser. Next, I load up my plate with a sample of each food. The short ribs are tendered, smoky, salty, and charred. I add on the BBQ sauce and strip the bone clean of meat. They are heavenly delicious and if you never had them before I recommend it. You can get the short ribs rare, medium, or well but I always choose medium. I think well would have been too much. The pork ribs were next, these had more seasoning to them and a decent amount of grilling. They retained their tenderness and rich fatty flavor. I covered these in the sauce too with a little hot sauce. I could eat these often. The rice is perfectly cooked, not to dry or wet just perfect. It comes with a few black olives and spicy pickled cauliflower.
For 40$ we were able to have a filling lunch and take the rest home for dinner. This spot is cash only but does have an ATM on site. Something you want to...
Read moreIf I can rate this place a ZERO (0) I would. I ordered half order of chicken and beef ribs with yellow rice and specifically told them to put it in one pan. When I got home and opened my tray, I discovered they put pork ribs instead of beef ribs when I called the establishment back and told her they had messed up my order and that I do not eat pork due to religious reasons she told me I ordered a combo and it comes with pork ribs. I explained to her I did not order a combo and that I ordered my specific order and they charged me extra which I didn’t mind but what pissed me off was that I did not get the beef ribs that I ordered. When I asked her, what is she going to do about it? She said nothing, which is crazy to me because I just spent money to get something that I had never ordered. And the other crazy thing is it’s Ramadan. I told her I was Muslim and I don’t eat pork and she didn’t even care that they gave me the wrong order. Poor Customer Service establishment terrible management terrible this is why I will never come back here. For anyone who’s reading this y’all should try Elm Street barbecue in the ironbound section, cause this...
Read moreI USED to go here for many years and, for a while, it WAS the best. Over the years they have increased in popularity and have gotten very greedy. They have stopped caring about the customer and the food and worry more about profiting. Their customer service is HORRIBLE. The lady that takes the order has no business dealing with people and the owner should grow a spine and say something because she treats the customer with disrespect in front of him Anyways, on to the food. WOW and that is not a good wow. When eating here, make sure you are well hydrated and you do not suffer from hypertension. Why? The food is way too salty. I understand maybe once or twice, but ALL THE TIME? Come on! Aside from that, I do like the spice it has, whenever they decide to put on a little sauce to the meat. I would not recommend this place anymore until they turn it around. They should start putting pride in their food again and pay better attention to the customers. We are the reason why they are so popular, so stop worrying so much about your pockets and give us a...
