Canela Bakery — Restaurant in Newark

My son and I visited Newark on two occasions, looking for the best pastéis de nata. We tasted five different bakeries. We agree with the other reviewers that these from Canela are the best, very nearly as good as the ones we have eaten in Belém. A delightful crackly pastry and creamy filling - no hint of cornflour or thickening. (All our family have EXTENSIVE lifetime experience of Belém so we speak with some authority). Good strong coffee. We drove 2 hours to have another opportunity to enjoy Tony's amazing pasteis de nata - just like we had in Portugal! (We've been coming to Canela Bakery for 6 years now.) The environment is outstanding, the owner is an amazing person.

The famous Portuguese pastéis de nata are here, I was able to visit Portugal last year and visit more than 50 places and couldn’t find better pastel de nata.

I do believe the real pastel de nata migrated from Portugal to this place.
