Obviously brilliant bakers, but as their popularity grew, the way their front stuff allows themselves to treat customers became unacceptable. Today was the apotheosis: I decided to stop by during my morning dog walk. Tied the dog outside in the rain and went in. There was only one customer in front of me, so I hoped the dog doesn't have to get wet for long. After about 5 minutes waiting I realized that the customer in front of me still has not ordered and was still talking to the shop assistant. She was about my age but one of those ladies who liked to make their wealth very obvious: expensive clothes, gym figure, and the facial expression as if she was looking at insects not humans. First I thought she and the shop assistant were still discussing her order, so I waited. But after few more minutes it became clear that they were just chatting. So I very politely said 'Ma''am, I am sorry but I am waiting. Could you please order?". This is not an unusual situation in shops when one customers gets too chatty, so I expected the usual resolution: the chatty customer says sorry for keeping you waiting and finally places the order, the shop assistant says it was nice talking to you but let's serve you and then the lady after you etc. What happened in Bakery was completely off the charts: the rich woman turned to me, sized me up and said nothing. The shop assistant turned to me and said in a strict tone of voice "She was here before you!". I said "I know. But she is not ordering, you two are just chatting, and I have to wait meanwhile". The shop assistant didn't respond, turned to the rich lady and said "It's ok" and gestured her too continue talking! I said "No, it is actually not ok towards me, because I have to stand here and wait while you two are chatting". The shop assistant shrugged and gestured her to continue, the rich lady gave me an angry look and actually really continued telling her story to the shop assistant! So they both went back to ignoring me and continued talking. I said, "That' fine, you two have a nice morning, but in this case I will have to leave". The shop assistant turned to me and said "As you wish", then turned back to the rich lady and to chatting with her! And so I left, took the dog who got all wet in the rain and walked home with no babka but with the feeling of being snubbed by a boy 3 times younger than me who preferred to please an inconsiderate but...
Read moreI love Bakey! Prior to its arrival in Newton, a friend and I would drive together to Boston and one of us would shop while the other stayed in the car. I am only giving a 4 star review because I am so disappointed that only the chocolate babka is sold as a loaf. I would be happy to have all the other flavors sold as loaves but I, and my friends, especially want to be able to buy a loaf of cinnamon babka rather than multiple small babkas. BTW, Yoav, who helped me when I recently shopped in Newton was very knowledgeable...

The staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing, with a nice area to sit and enjoy the pastries.
We got a variety of pastries, such as the almond pastry. The almond pastry was quite tasty, with a light almond flavor but baked well and flaky. The other pastries tasted good as well, though the strawberry one wasn't a favorite as it felt...
